Description
Mr. 0 is the code name used by Sir Crocodile, the leader of the criminal syndicate Baroque Works and a former member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. His background as a pirate who once sailed the New World and suffered a major defeat at the hands of Whitebeard shaped his cold, calculating, and deeply ambitious personality. Rather than continue searching for treasure on the open seas, he turned to political manipulation and large-scale conspiracy, concealing his true identity under the Mr. 0 alias while operating as a public hero in the desert kingdom of Alabasta.

His motivations are driven by a desire for ultimate power and control. He orchestrated Operation Utopia, a long-term plan to destabilize Alabasta through engineered drought and civil unrest, allowing him to seize the kingdom and locate the ancient weapon Pluton, which he believed would give him the strength to challenge even the World Government. Mr. 0 is patient, strategic, and ruthless, viewing people as assets to be used and discarded. He demands absolute results from his subordinates and punishes failure severely.

In the story, Mr. 0 serves as the primary antagonist of the Alabasta Saga. His role is that of a hidden mastermind who manipulates events from the shadows while maintaining a respectable public image. His presence raises the stakes from localized threats to a nation‑wide crisis, testing the Straw Hat Pirates in ways that go beyond simple combat.

Key relationships include his partnership with Miss All Sunday, later revealed as Nico Robin, who acts as his second‑in‑command and the only person aware of his true plans. He also relies on high‑ranking agents such as Mr. 1, who remains fiercely loyal even after Crocodile’s downfall. His rivalry with Monkey D. Luffy is central; Crocodile initially dismisses Luffy as a nuisance but is forced to respect his resilience after their battles. Their dynamic is often described as a dark mirror of Luffy’s own ambition—both driven and charismatic, but Crocodile uses his power to dominate rather than to liberate.

Over the course of the narrative, Mr. 0 experiences development from an untouchable warlord to a defeated prisoner. His defeat in Alabasta strips him of his Warlord status and leads to his imprisonment in Impel Down. Later, during the mass breakout, he forms a temporary alliance with Luffy and fights alongside him in the Paramount War, revealing a more pragmatic and unpredictable side to his personality.

His notable abilities stem from the Suna Suna no Mi, a Logia‑type Devil Fruit that allows him to turn his body into sand and control it at will. He can desiccate anything he touches, draining moisture from living beings and the environment, create massive sandstorms, and form weapons from sand. His Logia intangibility makes him immune to most physical attacks unless countered by a specific weakness—such as water or blood. Beyond his Devil Fruit, he is physically strong, skilled in hand‑to‑hand combat, and wields a golden hook that conceals a poison blade. His greatest asset, however, is his formidable intellect and strategic patience, making him one of the most dangerous opponents Luffy faces in the early Grand Line.
