Description
Koichi Shikishima is the main protagonist in the 2023 film Godzilla Minus One. A former Second Lieutenant and kamikaze pilot for the Imperial Japanese Navy during the final days of World War II, his life is defined by a single moment of paralyzing fear. While stationed on Odo Island in 1945, he feigns a mechanical issue to avoid his suicide mission, and when a dinosaur-like creature emerges, he freezes at the critical moment. He fails to fire his plane's guns, and the creature, later known as Godzilla, slaughters the island garrison. Shikishima and the mechanic Sosaku Tachibana are the only survivors, and Tachibana harshly condemns him for his cowardice.

Returning to a firebombed Tokyo, Shikishima discovers his parents have been killed. He is immediately consumed by profound survivor's guilt and self-loathing, marked by severe post-traumatic stress disorder. His personality is withdrawn, melancholic, and emotionally numb; he experiences frequent nightmares and feels fundamentally unworthy of happiness or human connection. His motivation is initially a confused but intense search for redemption, which often takes the form of a passive death wish. He believes he has no right to live when others died because of his inaction.

His life begins to change when he meets Noriko Oishi, a resilient young woman caring for an orphaned infant named Akiko. Despite his emotional barriers, Shikishima takes them into his home, forming an unconventional family unit. To support them, he takes hazardous work on the minesweeper Shinsei Maru. There, he builds tentative friendships and a sense of camaraderie with the crew including Captain Yoji Akitsu, the young Shiro Mizushima, and the brilliant former naval engineer Kenji Noda. His relationship with Noriko is the emotional anchor of his recovery; she demands that he share his trauma and forbids him from dying, forcing him to see his life as having value. His relationship with Sosaku Tachibana is deeply complex and built on mutual trauma. Tachibana holds a bitter grudge against Shikishima, but years later agrees to help repair a fighter plane for the final battle against Godzilla. Secretly, Tachibana installs an ejection seat, giving Shikishima the means to survive and representing a crucial act of forgiveness.

His role in the story is that of the central survivor whose personal arc embodies the films themes of trauma, collective guilt, and finding meaning after disaster. He is the lone witness to Godzilla original awakening and the man who must ultimately face it. His notable ability is not superhuman combat skill, but a deep capacity for endurance, resilience, and psychological change. His character development is the core of the narrative. He transitions from a man paralyzed by shame and seeking a noble death into a hero who chooses to live. In the climax, he pilots a Kyushu J7W Shinden fighter in a kamikaze attack on Godzilla, crashing into the monsters mouth. Instead of dying, he uses the ejection seat and survives. This act represents his final absolution; he releases himself from the obligation of wartime sacrifice and fully commits to a future with Noriko and Akiko. His ultimate victory is not just defeating the monster, but choosing to embrace life over death.
