Description
Prince Zardoz is a central antagonist in the series Voltes V: Legacy. He is a prince of the Boazanian Empire, born as the son of Baron Hrothgar and his first wife, Rosalia. His father later fled Boazan and took up a new life on Earth under the name Ned Armstrong, which makes Zardoz a half-brother to Steve, Big Bert, and Little Jon, the young pilots at the heart of the story. After Baron Hrothgar's departure, Emperor Zu Zambojil ordered Zardoz to lead an invasion of Earth as an act of revenge, placing the prince at the head of the empire's campaign against humanity.

Zardoz's background is shaped heavily by the harsh values of Boazanian society and by his uncle, the emperor. As a child, he was naturally kind and affectionate, but this gentle temperament disgusted his uncle, who deliberately raised him to be hateful and to look down on non-Boazanians. This upbringing left Zardoz desperate to prove himself as a warrior, and he carries out brutal acts in the name of honor, seeking the approval of his uncle and the empire that raised him. His ruthless and ambitious exterior masks a deep need for recognition and a tragic sense of being shaped by forces beyond his control.

In the story, Zardoz serves as the primary military commander of the Boazanian forces opposing the Voltes V team. One of his most notable operations involves infiltrating Camp Big Falcon under the false identity of Manuel Nobaz to gather intelligence on the Voltes V super robot. This undercover mission demonstrates that he is not merely a brute but also a capable strategist and deceiver. As the conflict escalates, Zardoz confronts the Voltes V pilots directly. During the final battles, he finds himself in the cockpit of a statue known as the God of War, which transforms into a massive robot called Godor, and he fights a colossal duel against Steve and the rest of the Voltes V team.

His key relationships are defined by family conflict and imperial politics. His bond with his uncle, Emperor Zu Zambojil, is the most influential in his life, as the emperor both forged his worldview and ultimately discards him. His father, Baron Hrothgar, now living as Ned Armstrong, is the target of the invasion he leads, turning their relationship into a tragic confrontation between father and son. His half-brothers, Steve, Big Bert, and Little Jon, are his enemies on the battlefield, and their clashes carry the weight of this hidden family connection. Late in the series, Zu Zander and the entire Boazanian Empire abandon and exile Zardoz, rejecting him despite everything he has done for his planet. This betrayal strips him of his status and leaves him isolated, setting the stage for his final, desperate confrontation with the Voltes V team.

Zardoz's development follows a path from loyal imperial prince to abandoned and broken outcast. He starts as a confident commander carrying out the emperor's will, but his sacrifices earn him no loyalty in return, and his arc ends with his identity as a prince destroyed. His notable abilities include military command, strategic infiltration, and personal combat skill, as well as the ability to pilot the powerful robot Godor in battle. These abilities make him a formidable adversary, but his story is ultimately one of a weapon created by the empire and then cast aside by it.
