Description
Little John Armstrong, also known by his original Japanese name Hiyoshi Gou, is the youngest of the three Armstrong brothers and a central member of the Voltes V team. He is the son of the human scientist Mary Ann Armstrong and the Boazanian prince Ned Armstrong, who was originally named Hrothgar. Due to his father's complex heritage, Little John is of mixed human and Boazanian blood, making him and his brothers targets of the invading Boazanian forces led by their estranged half-brother, Prince Zardoz. His father disappeared from Earth when Little John was very young, leaving him with few memories of paternal affection, a void only partially filled by his protective older brothers, Steve and Big Bert.

In terms of personality, Little John is defined by a remarkable intellect and an innocent, childlike demeanor. He is a prodigy with an extraordinary aptitude for mechanics, robotics, and electromagnetism, a talent recognized by university professors from a very young age. This genius, however, is balanced by his status as the youngest sibling. He is often playful and can be impulsive, sometimes undertaking projects like building his own robot or sneaking off to competitions without permission, which earns him scoldings from his eldest brother, Steve. Despite his brilliance, he deeply feels the absence of his father and craves the warmth of a complete family, a need that shapes his reliance on his brothers and his dedication to the team.

Little John's primary motivation is to protect his family and his home planet from the Boazanian invasion. Initially, his mother forbade him from piloting due to his young age, but when the invasion began, he was one of the few available pilots and proved his capability, earning a permanent spot on the Voltes team. His role in the story is crucial as the pilot of the Volt Frigate, which forms the legs of the giant super robot Voltes V. Beyond piloting, he serves as the team's technical specialist and repairman, handling critical field maintenance and using his inventive skills to aid in their missions. His technical prowess is further demonstrated by his creation of Tako-chan (also known as Octo-One), a small octopus-shaped robot companion.

His key relationships are centered around his family. He shares a close, though sometimes teasing, bond with his older brothers, Steve and Big Bert, who act as his protectors and guardians. Following the death of his mother, Mary Ann, who sacrificed herself to protect the team, Dr. Richard Smith becomes a paternal figure to Little John, encouraging his passion for machinery. A unique and complex relationship also exists with his half-brother, Prince Zardoz, whom Little John initially sees good in and even nicknames Bro Manuel, gifting him a toy battleship that later becomes a symbol of their fractured kinship.

Throughout his development, Little John transitions from a sheltered child prodigy to an indispensable warrior. A significant event in his journey is being kidnapped by the Boazanians, an ordeal from which he uses his technical ingenuity to aid in his own rescue. He constantly seeks to prove his maturity and capability, pushing back against being perceived as naive. His internal conflict regarding his Boazanian heritage also surfaces, creating questions about his identity as he learns more about his father's past and his own place in the conflict between Earth and Boazan.

Little John possesses several notable abilities. He is a highly skilled pilot, specifically trained for the Volt Frigate, and his expertise in aquatic tactics makes him an expert in swimming and diving. His most significant talent, however, is his genius-level intellect in robotics and mechanics, which allows him to perform complex repairs and invent advanced technological devices. He is also shown to be surprisingly brave, once threatening a shark with a knife during a deep-sea dive. His pilot uniform is characteristically light green or lime green, and he is often depicted in casual attire such as a sailor suit.
