Live action TV
Description
Jamie Robinson is a central character and the sole female pilot of the Volt Machine team in the live-action series Voltes V: Legacy. She is a direct adaptation of Megumi Oka from the original 1977 anime and is portrayed as a young woman of exceptional skill and discipline.
From a very young age, Jamie was trained in the art of ninjutsu by her father, General Oscar Robinson, who served as a high-ranking commander within the Earth Defense Force. This rigorous upbringing instilled in her extraordinary physical abilities, lightning-fast reflexes, and a mastery of combat techniques. She later enrolled at Camp Big Falcon, the secret military installation where she honed her skills as a mecha pilot, ultimately earning her place as a key member of the Voltes team. In combat, Jamie pilots the Volt Lander, the component that forms the legs of the super robot Voltes V. Her role is critical, requiring precision and coordination to ensure the successful combination, or "volt-in," of the five separate machines.
Personality-wise, Jamie is defined by her calm, alert, and composed demeanor. She frequently acts as the voice of reason within the team, especially during moments of personal conflict between her male teammates. Her cool-headed nature and uncanny skills are what qualified her as the fifth member of the team, bringing a balanced and professional perspective to high-stakes situations. Beneath this composed exterior, however, is a compassionate and deeply loyal individual who is fiercely protective of those she cares about.
Jamie’s role in the story is defined by a web of key relationships that shape her character arc. A significant portion of her development involves a complex romantic dynamic with two of her fellow pilots. Steve Armstrong, the team leader and pilot of the Volt Cruiser, secretly harbors deep romantic feelings for her but is hesitant to act on them due to his own emotional burdens. Another teammate, Mark Gordon, who pilots the Volt Bomber, is much more open with his affection, frequently flirting with Jamie and bringing her gifts. This results in a brief romantic relationship between Jamie and Mark, though it is later acknowledged that Jamie may have entered this relationship partly to provoke Steve's ex-girlfriend, Eva Sanchez, who had been making her life difficult out of jealousy. The resulting tensions lead to a falling out between Steve and Mark and the dissolution of Jamie’s relationship with Mark, who asks that they remain professional teammates.
Her most profound relationship is with her father, General Oscar Robinson. He is initially portrayed as a stern and protective parent who, despite being proud of her abilities, secretly wished she would not become a Voltes pilot due to the immense danger it entailed. Their bond becomes the source of the series' most significant emotional trauma for Jamie. While searching a beach, Jamie finds a ring that is actually a Boazanian mind-control device. Under the influence of the alien general Oslak, she is forced to attack her father and his convoy. General Robinson manages to subdue Jamie and remove the ring, freeing her from its control, but he is then fatally shot by Oslak while protecting her. This event devastates Jamie, who is wracked with guilt. She later learns that her father had been suffering from terminal cancer, which had led to his resignation from the military, a secret he kept to spare her worry. A posthumous letter from her father, expressing his pride and love, becomes a crucial element of her grieving process.
The trauma of her father’s death is compounded by further persecution from her rival, Eva Sanchez, who eventually ambushes and shoots Jamie. The attack leaves her severely injured and hospitalized for a time, forcing her to step away from active combat duty. Her journey is one of profound loss, guilt, and recovery, as she struggles to overcome her grief and the trauma of having been used as a weapon against her own family.
Notably, Jamie is a highly capable fighter and pilot. Her primary abilities stem from her extensive training as a kunoichi, or female ninja. She is proficient in armed and unarmed combat, using her agility and precise strikes in battle. As a pilot, while she has adequate technical knowledge, she tends to rely more on her sharp reflexes and strategic thinking. An unusual but documented weakness is her kabourophobia, an intense fear of crabs. She and fellow pilot Mark Gordon are distinguished as the only two fully human members of the Voltes team, which adds a unique dynamic to their interactions with the Armstrong brothers, who are of partial alien heritage.
