Description
Octo-1 is a small, red, octopus-shaped robot that appears in the 2023 television series Voltes V: Legacy as a companion machine built by the youngest Armstrong brother, Little Jon. The character did not exist in the original Japanese anime, but it serves as an adaptation of that series' flying octopus robot Takko-1, also known as Takko-chan, and it fills a similar role as an unofficial sixth member of the Voltes team. Little Jon, a gifted young inventor, created Octo-1 as his most prized invention and regards it with great affection, treating the little robot almost like a best friend and a full-fledged teammate rather than a mere tool.
Octo-1 was introduced when Little Jon unveiled it to his older brother Steve Armstrong and their teammate Jamie Robinson. As soon as it was revealed, the robot came to life, greeted the pair with the cheerful words "Ohayo, konnichiwa," and playfully addressed the audience by introducing itself by name. Its personality is friendly, cheerful, and eager to please, and it communicates in simple, upbeat phrases that give it a warm and approachable presence. Although it is a machine, it behaves with an almost childlike enthusiasm, and its comic timing and direct way of speaking make it an endearing presence around the team.
In terms of motivation, Octo-1 is guided by the purpose its creator gave it: to assist the Voltes team in any way it can. It shows clear loyalty to Little Jon and a genuine eagerness to take part in the team's activities, whether that means joining its creator in the cockpit of the Volt Frigate, carrying out errands, or gathering information. It is light enough to be lifted with one hand and is capable of flying on its own, and its small size allows it to move around in spaces where the team's large battle machines cannot go.
Its most significant role in the story comes during an investigation into the true identity of Ned Armstrong, the Armstrong children's father, whose unexpected return raises suspicions among the team. Octo-1 is sent to investigate and sneaks into Ned's bedroom, where it discovers the body of a deceased soldier hidden in a closet. This finding confirms that Ned is an impostor. Octo-1 also detects an explosive device planted on the false Ned, providing the team with concrete evidence of the deception and helping to expose the threat before it can cause further harm.
Octo-1's key relationships center on its bond with Little Jon, who developed it and considers it an extension of the Voltes family, and on its supportive interactions with the other team members, particularly Steve and Jamie, whom it meets on the day it is unveiled. Over the course of the series, the robot develops from a newly revealed novelty into a dependable investigative and support asset, proving that even a small companion machine can make a meaningful contribution to the team's fight. Its notable abilities include independent flight, self-directed movement, data analysis, information processing, surveillance and reconnaissance, and the capacity to detect hidden objects and explosives, all of which make it a valuable addition to the Voltes team despite its size.
