Description
Lewis Smith is a United States Marine Corps Titanostrider pilot and the deuteragonist of Brave Bang Bravern!. He is a young man with short blonde hair and blue eyes, and he serves as an elite armored pilot under a multinational task force. From childhood, Smith held a strong admiration for heroes, and this lifelong passion shaped his cheerful, outgoing personality. He is a natural mood-maker who does not shy away from any situation, and he carries an unabashed enthusiasm for robots and heroic ideals.
Smith meets Isami Ao during joint American-Japanese military exercises in Oahu, Hawaii, when the alien Deathdrives invade Earth. He quickly bonds with Isami, and their relationship becomes a central emotional anchor of the story. Smith is consistently supportive and encouraging, often acting as the more morally straightforward counterpart to Isami’s more reserved and uncertain nature. When the strange robot Bravern appears and chooses Isami as his pilot, Smith accepts this without jealousy, instead focusing on how best to assist his friend.
After the first Deathdrive, Superbia, is defeated, a young woman named Lulu is ejected from the enemy machine. Smith takes her under his care, helping her adjust to life at the base as she learns to speak, eat, and walk. He develops a protective, almost paternal attachment to Lulu. He later attempts to pilot Superbia himself, but fails, and is eventually given a new Titanostrider that Lulu can co-pilot with him.
As the conflict escalates, Smith forms his own unit, the Brave Knights, to fight alongside Bravern and Isami. During a battle against the Deathdrive Knuth, Smith makes the ultimate sacrifice, destroying Knuth at the cost of his own life. However, his will to protect others does not end. His ghost merges with his Titanostrider and Knuth, and Knuth’s power sends him back in time to the beginning of the Deathdrive invasion. There, he is reborn as Bravern itself, retroactively fulfilling the role of the super robot that had been guiding and protecting Isami all along.
Smith’s notable abilities include his exceptional skills as a Titanostrider pilot, his bravery under fire, and his capacity to inspire those around him. His most significant ability is his unyielding heroic spirit, which ultimately transcends death and allows him to become a being of pure courage, reshaping the course of the war. Through his sacrifice and rebirth, he embodies the series’ themes of bravery, selflessness, and the enduring power of human connection.
