TV-Series
Description
Isami Ao is a 24-year-old Third Lieutenant serving in the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force as a pilot of a Titanostrider, a type of humanoid armored兵器. He was born on August 31st and stands 178 centimeters tall. Isami is a member of the Titanstrider-based Special Armored Group. His personality is initially marked by a calm, collected, and taciturn demeanor, exhibiting a serious and somewhat rigid professional attitude. Despite this stoic exterior, he possesses a strong internal drive to protect others and refuses to leave a comrade behind, as seen when he risks his own life to save a fellow soldier during the first alien attack.

His role in the story is defined by an extraordinary and unwilling circumstance: he is the sole individual capable of piloting Bravern, a sentient and flamboyant super robot that appears from the sky specifically to request Isami as its operator. This event catapults him from a skilled but conventional military pilot in a realistic war story into the center of a conflict against an alien force known as the Deathdrives, a situation for which he feels completely unprepared. The burden of being Earth's primary weapon against the invaders leads him to believe he must shoulder the responsibility of fighting alone to spare others from the costs of war.

Isami's key relationships are central to his character arc. His most significant dynamic is with Bravern, whose loud, heroic, and melodramatic personality clashes sharply with Isami's own serious nature, forcing Isami into the role of the exasperated straight man. He forms a crucial bond with Lewis Smith, a charismatic American Marine pilot. Smith acts as Isami's staunchest defender, especially when military authorities distrust and interrogate him, and helps pull him from his lowest psychological points. Their relationship evolves from professional rivalry to deep friendship, culminating in a pivotal boxing match where they reveal their true feelings and fight as equals.

Throughout the series, Isami undergoes a significant and challenging character development. The immense stress, trauma of combat, and the bizarre nature of his connection to Bravern cause his stoic personality to crack. He experiences a Heroic BSoD, becoming mentally shattered, irritable, and antisocial. He is subjected to torture and interrogation by his own side, which deepens his trauma and isolation. However, through the support of Smith and others, and by witnessing the courage of his comrades, he gradually overcomes his fears and isolation. This internal change culminates in a physical transformation when he fully embraces his role as a hero, gaining a spiky hairstyle and the ability to enter a golden super mode named Burn Brave Big Bang, signifying his newfound courage and resolve.

As a pilot, Isami is exceptionally skilled. He is considered an ace pilot whose abilities are recognized not only by his own country but also by international soldiers, compensating for his Titanostrider's dated technology with sheer talent and a bold, sometimes reckless, tactical mind. While initially paralyzed by fear during the first real battle, his core nature as someone who cannot abandon others is a constant driving force. Once he overcomes his psychological barriers, he learns to synchronize fully with Bravern, even calling out the robot's dramatic attack names himself, embracing the absurdity to become a truly effective hero.
