Description
Gideon Gordon Graves serves as the primary antagonist in the anime, holding the position of Ramona Flowers' seventh and final evil ex-boyfriend. He is the founder and original leader of the League of Ramona's Evil Ex-Boyfriends, a group he established to control the future of her romantic life.
His origins trace back to his birth as Gordon Goose in North Bay, Ontario, where he was an awkward and unfashionable teenager. After a humiliating public rejection when he presented a popular girl with a detailed business plan for why she should date him, he left his hometown and eventually built a fortune as a successful music mogul, reinventing himself under the alias Gideon Graves. He once claimed that his creation, the Glow, was the key to his millions, using it as a form of emotional warfare to manipulate people.
Gideon's personality is defined by extreme arrogance, a cool and calculating demeanor, and a deeply narcissistic worldview. He is highly intelligent and manipulative, preferring to orchestrate events from the shadows while sending others to do his bidding. Beneath this controlled surface lies a sadistic nature and a fragile ego that reacts with explosive anger when his plans are thwarted or his self-image is challenged. He views his romantic partners not as people to love, but as possessions or accessories to his own greatness, and he reacts violently when they leave him, seeing it as an insult to his perceived perfection. He is prone to monologuing and coldly insulting his enemies by pointing out their personal flaws.
His primary motivation is a desire for total control, specifically over Ramona Flowers. He initially saw his relationship with her as an experiment, during which he infected her with the Glow. When she attempted to leave him, his rage and her emotional reaction caused her to vanish into Subspace. This event led him to form the League of Evil Exes, intending to ensure no one else could ever truly be with her. His ultimate, twisted plan was to add Ramona to a collection of six of his other former girlfriends, whom he kept suspended in cryogenic stasis in his lair, the Chaos Theater, so he could thaw and date any of them at his convenience.
In the story, Gideon is the final obstacle Scott Pilgrim must overcome. For much of the narrative, he remains a distant, shadowy figure who observes Scott and Ramona. He spies on them through the Subspace highway within Scott's mind, even altering some of Scott's memories for his own amusement, which contributes to Scott's ongoing confusion. His key relationships are defined by control and manipulation. He emotionally abused Ramona during their time together and maintained a psychic hold on her long after their breakup. He also has a cold, transactional relationship with his former bandmate Envy Adams, whom he rebuffs coldly when she shows concern for him.
Gideon undergoes a significant development in the anime's alternate timeline. After being usurped as leader of the League by Matthew Patel, he loses his company and falls into a deep depression, reverting to his awkward, insecure teenage self. He is taken in by his former classmate, Julie Powers, with whom he eventually forms a genuine partnership and romantic relationship, regaining his confidence and plotting to reclaim what he lost.
Gideon possesses several notable abilities. He is a genius inventor who created the Glow, a powerful psychological weapon that overwhelms its victims with their own personal traumas and mental hang-ups, effectively trapping them within their own minds. He can also use the Glow to manipulate Subspace, allowing him to enter and control the minds of others, transform himself into a grotesque, god-like form within that mental realm, and spy on people. In physical combat, he is a highly competent fighter and a skilled swordsman, often using a katana hidden in his cane or a backup blade hidden on his person.
