Description
Jade Mask is a monster and an operative of the Black Cross Army, the terrorist organization opposing the Gorengers. He is designated as the fourth Black Cross Crusade Monster to be sent against the team. As his name suggests, he wears a multi-colored jade mask, which is the defining feature of his appearance, over a poncho. His primary physical weapon is a simple wooden club.
His background is established as one of the Black Cross Army's primary agents in their initial wave of attacks. He was responsible for leading the assault on the Hokkaido branch of the international defence organization EAGLE. This attack was devastatingly successful, as his forces killed every person at the base, leaving only one survivor, a young woman named Peggy Matsuyama. Among those he personally killed was Jiro Daigo, a man for whom Peggy had deep romantic feelings.
In his active mission, Jade Mask operates with a degree of cunning and deception uncommon for early monsters. He disguises himself as a respected and esteemed scientist to work in a secret laboratory. His objective is to deploy a horrifying biological weapon of his own design called the "Jade Mold." This deadly mould can kill any person who becomes infected by it, even simply through airborne respiration. To demonstrate its lethality and intimidate EAGLE, he personally executes one of his own scientists who attempted to defect, and deliberately infects the other, using him as a walking warning. His final plan for mass dissemination involves filling a large balloon with air saturated with Jade Mold spores and detonating it in the atmosphere, which would allow the deadly agent to spread over a wide area.
His role in the story is that of a major early threat, serving as the central antagonist of the fourth episode. His personal connection to a core team member elevates him beyond a standard monster-of-the-week. His primary and most significant relationship is with Peggy Matsuyama, the future Momorenger of the Gorenger team. His slaughter of her comrades and the man she loved at Hokkaido makes his defeat a personal quest for her. It is Peggy who, while investigating the Jade Mold as a reporter, uncovers the details of his balloon delivery system, allowing the Gorengers to formulate a plan to stop him without triggering a city-wide catastrophe.
Information on Jade Mask's personality, any internal motivations beyond serving the Black Cross Army, and his development across the series is absent from available records. Ultimately, his scheme is foiled by the Gorengers. When his plan fails and he attempts to escape in his own balloon, Jade Mask is destroyed by the team's signature combined attack, the Gorenger Storm. No reliable direct information exists concerning his personality, his motivations, his development throughout the series, or notable abilities beyond his weapon and his use of the Jade Mold.
