Description
Anjuro Katagiri, commonly referred to by the nickname Angelo, is an antagonist introduced in the early narrative of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable. Born in 1964 in the town of Morioh, Katagiri possesses an exceptionally high IQ of 160, a trait that starkly contrasts with his deeply ingrained criminal nature. His history of lawlessness began at the age of twelve when he was convicted for robbery and rape, marking the start of a pattern of escalating violence that would lead him to spend approximately twenty years of his life incarcerated. By the time of the story's events, he had earned a reputation as one of Japan's most notorious and heinous criminals, having committed acts that included robbery, murder, and the sexual assault of minors.

The personality of Katagiri is that of a high-intelligence, remorseless, and sadistic individual, often characterized as a psychopath. He displays a profound arrogance, particularly after acquiring his Stand, which allows him to kill from a distance with seeming impunity. This power fuels a mocking and taunting demeanor toward his adversaries. He harbors a deep contempt for those he perceives as self-righteous or arrogant, a trait that becomes a focal point of his interactions with the protagonist, Josuke Higashikata. Despite his cunning and ability to formulate patient, meticulous plans, his overconfidence and sadistic tendencies frequently cloud his judgment, creating openings for his opponents. When cornered, his bravado collapses into hypocrisy, as he desperately questions the right of others to judge him, conveniently ignoring his own atrocities. His driving motivation is a potent mixture of revenge and self-preservation. After being thwarted by Josuke, he becomes singularly focused on killing not only the young Stand user but also his mother and grandfather, seeking retribution for his humiliation and interference.

Katagiri’s role in the story is that of the first major threat that Josuke Higashikata must confront. He was originally arrested years prior by Ryohei Higashikata, Josuke's grandfather and a dedicated police officer. While awaiting execution on death row, Katagiri was struck by a Stand Arrow fired by Keicho Nijimura, which awakened his own Stand, Aqua Necklace. This ability allowed him to survive his scheduled hanging, after which he escaped prison and returned to Morioh to continue his killing spree. His return prompts Jotaro Kujo to warn Josuke, setting their eventual confrontation in motion. After a failed attempt to assassinate Josuke’s family, Katagiri successfully murders Ryohei Higashikata by tricking him into ingesting his Stand, an act that transforms the conflict from a simple mission to stop a criminal into a deeply personal quest for vengeance. This event serves as a crucial catalyst for Josuke’s character, solidifying his resolve as a protector of his town.

The key relationships in Katagiri’s story are defined by his antagonism. His relationship with Ryohei Higashikata is rooted in past incarceration and present revenge, as he callously murders the officer who once arrested him. His relationship with Josuke is one of intense, sadistic animosity. He taunts Josuke for failing to save his grandfather and derives pleasure from his suffering. The narrative provides little room for character development in the traditional sense; Katagiri is an irredeemable force of malice who remains unrepentant until the very end. His defeat, however, marks a significant development in the overarching plot. After a final battle in the Higashikata household, where he uses a rainy day to turn the entire house into his domain, he is captured by Josuke and Jotaro. In a fit of rage after Katagiri insults his hair, Josuke uses his Stand, Crazy Diamond, to fuse the criminal’s entire body with a nearby rock. This gruesome fate leaves Katagiri alive but completely immobilized, transformed into a permanent, suffering fixture of the Morioh landscape. Ironically, this grotesque formation, known as Angelo Rock, becomes a local landmark and a popular meeting spot for lovers, serving as an eternal punishment for a man who despised the happiness of others.

Katagiri’s notable abilities stem entirely from his Stand, Aqua Necklace, a long-range Stand that manifests as and manipulates liquid. Its primary capability is to transform into any form of water-based liquid, including vapor and steam, allowing it to be nearly invisible and intangible to conventional attacks. This Stand is exceptionally dangerous due to its method of attack: it can be ingested by an unsuspecting victim, after which it can either tear them apart from the inside or take direct control of their body to use as a puppet. Katagiri demonstrates significant strategic cunning in using this power, infiltrating homes through water pipes, hiding his Stand in milk bottles, and manipulating the environment by using humidifiers during a rainstorm to create a battlefield where his Stand had near-total freedom of movement. The primary weakness of Aqua Necklace is its reliance on its liquid state; if it is sealed in an airtight container, such as a glass bottle or a rubber glove, it becomes trapped and effectively powerless.
