Description
Mr. Tanabe runs a tight ship as the homeroom and English teacher for Class 1-2 at Momomi Middle School, instructing Takagi, Nishikata, Mina, Yukari, Sanae, Nakai, and Mano. He demands quiet and order, showing little patience for disruptions or broken rules. His frequent targets for discipline include Nishikata, reprimanded verbally or sometimes with thrown chalk for inattention or noise. He strictly enforces school policies, even confiscating holiday chocolate on Valentine’s Day and Christmas.
Visually, he appears middle-aged with short black hair swept slightly upward, very small black pupils, and a trimmed mustache. His standard teaching uniform is a black tracksuit, swapped only for formal events like entrance ceremonies where he wears a suit and tie. Despite his stern exterior, flashes of leniency emerge, like overlooking a Valentine’s chocolate exchange acknowledging youthful feelings. Unexpected emotional depth surfaces too, evident when he becomes visibly tearful during his students' cultural festival performance.
His personal life shifts significantly. He begins a relationship with fellow teacher Ms. Tsukimoto, culminating in a proposal during Chapter 134 of the manga. Their marriage leads his student Sanae Tsukimoto, Ms. Tsukimoto’s younger sister, to address him informally as "Nii-san" (big brother). Professionally, he later advances to become Momomi Middle School's vice-principal. In this role, he oversees former students Nishikata and Nakai, now teachers themselves, and welcomes Takagi back as a trainee instructor.
His interactions consistently balance authority with underlying compassion. While quick to scold Nishikata for classroom disruptions—unaware they stem from Takagi’s teasing—he also displays moments of approachability, laughing at student antics during self-study. As both educator and later administrator, he remains a constant figure bridging the characters' adolescent and adult experiences.
