Description
Kang Won-seok is a character from the 2024 Korean drama series Parasyte: The Grey. He is a detective whose financial struggles and desire for a better life lead him to betray his fellow humans. At the start of the story, Won-seok is depicted as a detective who is deeply concerned about his low salary and his inability to provide a comfortable future for his daughter. This financial pressure and a feeling of being undervalued drive his actions throughout the series. Unlike the parasitic creatures that infiltrate human bodies, Won-seok remains fully human, but his motivations make him a unique and antagonistic figure.
Won-seok’s motivations are rooted in desperation and a skewed sense of self-preservation. Feeling that his work as a detective offers little reward, he becomes susceptible to a different kind of opportunity. This opportunity arises when he encounters a parasite inhabiting the body of Pastor Kwon from his local church. Instead of killing him, the parasite offers Won-seok a deal: join their cause in exchange for a better life and a position of power. Faced with death if he refuses, Won-seok accepts, driven by the promise that his loyalty will be rewarded in a new world order. He rationalizes his betrayal by believing that the parasites are more rational and see his true value, unlike his human superiors who overwork and underpay him.
Within the story, Won-seok serves as a human informant and operative for the parasitic organization based out of the Saejin Church. His role is crucial for the parasites because he can move undetected among humans. In this capacity, he betrays his colleagues on the police force and the special task force, Team Grey. His actions have severe consequences, as he is directly responsible for the deaths of other human characters, including a fellow detective named Chul-min and a parasitized individual used as a hunting dog by Team Grey. He continues to assist the parasites with the goal of securing a top position for himself once their leader takes over the body of the mayor of Namcheon.
Won-seok’s key relationships are defined by his betrayal. He is a colleague to other detectives like Chul-min, whom he ultimately helps to kill. His primary allegiance is to Pastor Kwon and the parasitic leadership, to whom he provides information and eliminates threats. However, this relationship is purely transactional and based on mutual exploitation. The parasites view him as a useful but ultimately disposable tool. Despite his service, they never intend to honor their promise in a way that benefits him as a human.
The development of Kang Won-seok is not one of redemption but of desperation leading to a tragic end. He begins as a cynical and dissatisfied public servant and makes a conscious choice to switch sides for personal gain. His character shows little regret for his actions, as he is focused on the future reward promised by the parasites. This trajectory culminates in his ultimate fate. In a desperate move by the lead parasite to survive, it kills Won-seok and takes over his body to continue its mission. His ambition to become a powerful human ally ends with him being consumed by the very creatures he served. As a detective, Won-seok possesses standard law enforcement skills, but his most notable ability is his access to police information and operations, which he weaponizes to aid the parasites. He is also entrusted with a blade weapon by the parasites, similar to their own biological tentacles, to use in his missions for them.
