Description
Banji Suke, often referred to as Sukeban, is the main protagonist of the comedic manga and its anime OVA adaptation, Oira Sukeban. He is a teenage boy with a volatile temperament and a strong propensity for violence, traits he inherited from his parents. His family life is chaotic and marked by constant relocation due to destructive behavior from both Banji and his father, which leads to them being expelled from various communities. The unusual dynamics of his family are further highlighted by the fact that his mother gave birth to him while she was in early adolescence, making her only about eleven years older than her son.

The central predicament of Banji’s story arises from his enrollment in a new school. After his father orchestrates a uniform mix-up, Banji is forced to attend an institution disguised as a girl, taking on the female alias Sukeban, a term which denotes a female gang leader. Contrary to some interpretations, the school he attends is not exclusively all-female. His motivations for maintaining this disguise are multifaceted. While the initial premise involves clearing his name after being blamed for town-wide chaos, Banji is also motivated by more self-serving desires. He is an academically disinterested and lecherous individual who uses his feminine guise to get closer to female classmates, frequently attempting inappropriate physical contact and exploiting what he sees as romantic opportunities.

In the story, Banji navigates a school environment filled with various rival factions, most notably the Pantyhose Brigade, a gang of female bullies. Despite his lack of interest in his studies, he compensates with formidable combative proficiency, routinely engaging in physical confrontations with these rivals. His key relationships include his interactions with the innocent classmate Otoko Dan, for whom he develops feelings, and his peculiar and often uncomfortable dynamic with his mother, which involves suggestive interactions that concern his father. Banji also clashes with a series of antagonists who challenge him, each representing different school clubs, such as the baseball club or the flower arranging club.

Across his various appearances, including the original manga and the 1992 OVA, Banji Suke exhibits minimal character development. His personality remains consistently rebellious and driven by his immediate impulses. He is often portrayed as being unaware of larger narrative threads, such as the assassins monitoring his actions or the significance of a pendant he receives, which are left without conclusive resolution. His notable abilities lie almost entirely in his fighting skills, which allow him to overcome a wide range of opponents in absurd, comedy-driven battles.
