Description
Mezou Shouji is a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School, training to become a professional hero under the hero name Tentacole. He is one of the tallest members of his class, standing at 187 centimeters, with short gray hair and black eyes. His most distinctive feature is his mutation-type Quirk, called Dupli-Arms or Replicant Arms, which manifests as two pairs of flexible, boneless tentacles growing from his shoulders. These tentacles are connected to his torso and arms by membranous webbing and can be manipulated with great dexterity. The tips of the tentacles can sprout cloned versions of his body parts, such as eyes, ears, mouths, and hands, each possessing heightened sensory abilities. This allows him to see or hear from a distance, communicate silently, or create additional limbs for combat.
Shouji’s background is shaped by his heteromorphic appearance. Growing up, he faced discrimination and fear from others because of his tentacles, which led him to wear a mask that covers the lower half of his face. Rather than resent society, he chose to become a hero who protects others and creates positive memories, believing that heroes are defined by their actions, not their appearance. He selected his hero name Tentacole because the word “tako” means octopus in Japanese, a direct reference to his octopus-like Quirk, and he wears his mutation as a badge of honor.
Personality-wise, Shouji is quiet, calm, and introspective. He rarely speaks unless necessary, but his actions demonstrate immense kindness and selflessness. He is entirely willing to risk his life for others, especially his classmates, and does not act on emotional impulses. Instead, he displays a mature sense of responsibility and analytical thinking, often assessing situations carefully before acting. He is empathetic and understanding, making him a reliable friend and teammate. Despite his intimidating stature, he is gentle and approachable to those who know him.
Shouji’s motivations are rooted in a desire to help others and to prove that heroes come in all forms. He does not care about negative judgments and is driven by a strong sense of duty. He values the safety of his peers above all and will put himself in harm’s way to protect them.
In the story, Shouji plays a supporting but crucial role in several major arcs. During the U.S.J. Incident, he uses his Quirk to scout and protect his classmates. In the Forest Training Camp arc, his abilities are vital for reconnaissance and defense. He also participates in the Paranormal Liberation War, where his strength and sensory skills contribute to the heroes’ efforts. His development shows him growing more confident in his role as a protector, though he remains humble and grounded.
Key relationships include his close bonds with Izuku Midoriya and Fumikage Tokoyami, among others in Class 1-A. He is particularly protective of younger or injured classmates, such as Minoru Mineta and Tsuyu Asui, and works well with anyone due to his cooperative nature. He also shares a mutual respect with Katsuki Bakugo, despite their differing temperaments.
His notable abilities extend beyond basic Quirk usage. Because his tentacles can replicate body parts with enhanced senses, he can perform long-range surveillance using his Octosearcher technique, creating multiple eyes and ears. In close combat, he uses moves like Octoblow, a barrage of powerful punches from multiple tentacles, and Octospansion, which enlarges one tentacle into a massive fist for a single devastating strike. His physical strength is considerable, allowing him to lift and carry teammates with ease, and his reflexes are sharp enough to evade fast attacks. Overall, Shouji’s Quirk, character, and dedication make him an underrated but invaluable hero-in-training.
