Description
Katagai is a character from the film Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning, serving as a supporting figure within the Chōshū Ishin-Shishi, the revolutionary faction to which the protagonist Kenshin belongs during the bakumatsu period. Operating directly under the command of the faction leader, Katsura Kogorō, Katagai is considered a trusted subordinate and right-hand man, often seen at Katsura’s side and frequently acting as a messenger. His importance lies in his reliability and his role as a conduit for information, passing orders and intelligence from Katsura to other members, including Kenshin himself and a fellow operative named Iizuka.

In terms of appearance, Katagai is a large man with a muscular build. He has black hair styled in a traditional topknot and sunken cheeks that give his face a distinctive, somewhat gaunt look. His attire typically consists of a cross-patterned shirt, white pants, white socks, and sandals, and he carries two swords, a katana and a wakizashi, on his left hip. His overall physical presence is that of a strong and dependable warrior, even though his actual skill in swordsmanship is never demonstrated in combat.

The personality of Katagai is defined by a deep sense of loyalty to his cause and his commander, yet he is not a blindly obedient follower. He is depicted as being thoughtful and unafraid to voice his concerns to Katsura if he believes a decision might be misjudged. This willingness to respectfully question his leader highlights a cautious and strategic mind. Moreover, Katagai shows genuine care for his allies, particularly expressing concern for Kenshin’s mental and emotional state after the young man had spent a year serving as a hitokiri, or a manslayer, an occupation known to weigh heavily on the soul. This concern reveals a paternal or brotherly side to him, showing he values the well-being of his comrades beyond just their utility as soldiers.

Katagai’s role in the story is primarily functional, acting as a loyal lieutenant, but his most significant action comes from his personal initiative, which ultimately leads to his demise. After the Kinmon Incident, Katagai is forced to go into hiding for five months like many of his fellow loyalists. During this period, he spots Iizuka, a comrade, walking openly through Kyoto when he should also be in hiding. This triggers Katagai’s inquisitive and cautious nature, leading him to follow Iizuka to a secluded shack on the outskirts of the city. From his hiding place, Katagai witnesses Iizuka passing information about Kenshin’s whereabouts to the Yaminobu, a shadowy group of spies and assassins working for the shogunate. This discovery confirms that Iizuka is the traitor who has been leaking Ishin-Shishi secrets to the bakufu.

His development, though cut short, is a tragic one. His loyalty and cautiousness, which made him a valuable asset, directly lead him to a truth that gets him killed. Realizing the gravity of the betrayal, Katagai attempts to escape to warn his comrades, but he is caught by Yatsume Mumyōi and Nakajō, two agents of the Yaminobu. He is killed before he can deliver his warning, leaving the faction vulnerable to further treachery for a time. His death serves as a key plot point, removing a loyal and perceptive voice from the inner circle and allowing Iizuka’s betrayal to continue unchecked. In terms of notable abilities, while Katagai is consistently shown armed with a daishō, the paired long and short swords of a samurai, his proficiency in combat is never shown or described. His primary strengths are his reliability, his loyalty, his perceptiveness, and his role as a trusted operative and messenger for Katsura.
