Description
Hyouko Otowa is a fictional character from the Jinchu arc, serving as a secondary antagonist and a member of the Six Comrades, a group of warriors assembled to exact revenge on the former assassin Hitokiri Battosai. He is a tall, slender man with an androgynous appearance, noted by other characters for his use of cosmetics such as red lipstick and pink nail polish, as well as his long black hair styled into distinctive pigtails, with one strand covering his left eye. His attire typically consists of a magenta juban under a light blue kimono with a jagged hem, and he accessorizes with a set of six spikes around his collar known as the Rikudouko, which serve a hidden purpose.
Otowa possesses a deeply sadistic personality, deriving genuine pleasure from harming and killing others, including innocent men, women, and children. While he generally maintains a calm, reserved, and almost languid demeanor, often smoking from a hookah, this facade masks a cruel nature. He is easily annoyed by disrespect or condescension, particularly from his leader, Yukishiro Enishi, and shows a tendency toward cowardice when confronted with an opponent who poses a real threat to his own safety. His primary motivation for joining Enishi's cause is not a genuine desire for revenge but rather the opportunity to indulge in slaughter. He claims to be avenging a friend named Nakajo, a shadow ninja and fellow killer whom Kenshin had slain, but this is merely a convenient excuse to participate in the conflict for his own enjoyment.
In the narrative, Otowa is first seen during the gathering of the Six Comrades at Gein's mansion, where he shows a glib attitude by criticizing the name Enishi proposes for the group. He participates in the initial phase of the plan to corner Kenshin by attacking the home of Police Chief Uramura, whom he tortures for information before being confronted by Kenshin himself. During this encounter, he demonstrates his reliance on trickery and concealed weapons, fleeing when his advantages are neutralized. His major role in the story unfolds during the final assault on the Kamiya Dojo, where he is matched against the young swordsman Yahiko Myojin. He initially dominates the fight using his deceptive abilities, but his composure shatters when he notices Kenshin watching from behind, intimidating him with an icy glare that makes him resolve to flee the moment his immediate fight is over. This panic and loss of nerve allows the severely wounded Yahiko to land a decisive counterattack, striking Otowa in the throat and defeating him.
Otowa's key relationships are largely functional and self-serving. He shows little genuine loyalty to his comrades in the Six Comrades, though he occasionally acts as a calming presence for the more volatile members, such as Inui Banjin. His backstory reveals a partnership with Nakajo, built on shared nightly killing sprees. His true interest is not in camaraderie but in using the group as a means to get close to enemies he can torment.
His notable abilities lie not in traditional swordsmanship, in which he is acknowledged to be an amateur, but in his mastery of "shadow instruments," an array of concealed assassin's tools. He claims to possess thirteen such weapons, though he demonstrates only a few. The Baika Chusen is a concealed crossbow strapped to his wrist, fired by a silk thread. He uses a Buddhist symbol painted on his hand to create a distraction, making the weapon appear supernatural. The Kasui Busuen are cubes that release a paralytic poison mist when thrown into water, which numbs the limbs for several minutes. The Bishamonken is a magnetic sword and sheath paired with Bishamonpun, iron filings that, when scattered on an opponent, cause the magnetized blade to be drawn unerringly toward them. His final weapon is the Rikudouko, the decorative spikes he wears, which can spring forward to skewer an opponent at close range. In revised editions of the manga, his arsenal is redesigned to include weapons hidden inside an umbrella and a silk hat, emphasizing a magician or gentleman thief aesthetic. In the live-action film adaptation, his abilities are altered; he wields two large curved scythes and uses a rapid-fire version of his sleeve arrows, ultimately meeting a different fate by self-destructing after being defeated by Kenshin. Following his defeat at the hands of Yahiko in the original story, Otowa is arrested by the police and taken into custody.
