Description
Benn Beckman serves as the first mate of the Red Hair Pirates, holding the position of the crew's second-highest authority directly under the captain, Shanks. His origin is the North Blue, though little else is known about his life before joining the crew. Over the course of the story, his appearance has changed noticeably. Twelve years ago, while the crew was staying in Luffy's home village of Foosha, Beckman had long, dark hair tied back in a ponytail. In the present timeline, his hair has turned gray and is worn short and slicked back. He has also gained a large, X-shaped scar on his left temple. Beckman is a tall individual, standing at 206 centimeters, and is rarely seen without a cigarette in his mouth and his rifle close at hand.

In terms of personality, Beckman stands out as the level-headed and composed member of the otherwise boisterous and fun-loving Red Hair Pirates. He is often the first to speak up in serious situations, asking pragmatic questions about the crew's circumstances, such as when he wondered how the World Government would react to Shanks's request to meet with Whitebeard. While he is less outwardly excitable than his crewmates, he often watches their antics with quiet amusement, such as when his captain panicked over Luffy being kidnapped or became even more drunk upon hearing news of Luffy's first bounty. Outside of his duties, he is known to be a playboy who enjoys the company of women.

Beckman's role in the story is intrinsically tied to his position as the trusted right-hand man of an Emperor of the Sea. He, along with Yasopp and Lucky Roux, is consistently depicted as one of Shanks's most trusted and vital crew members, always present when crucial events unfold. He acts as a pillar of silent support for the crew, balancing their lively energy with a grounded and deep attitude. His primary motivation appears to be his loyalty to Shanks and the success of their crew. He is a shrewd observer, correctly predicting that a young Luffy would one day become a great pirate.

Beckman shares a strong bond of mutual trust and understanding with Shanks. He comprehends the weight of his captain's responsibilities, though he is still occasionally left speechless by Shanks's more reckless or foolish actions. He also shares a warm, if distant, relationship with Monkey D. Luffy. Beckman befriended Luffy during the crew's year in Foosha Village and has held faith in his ambitions ever since, an opinion that has been proven correct as Luffy has risen to the status of an Emperor himself. During the Summit War of Marineford, Beckman played a critical role by stopping to confront Admiral Kizaru, pointing his gun at the powerful marine and ordering him not to move, a threat that the admiral briefly acknowledged. He has also participated in significant clashes involving the Red Hair Pirates, including their interception of the Kaidou and their subsequent arrival to end the Paramount War. It is also known that during the two-year timeskip, Beckman personally took the left arm of the Worst Generation pirate Eustass Kid.

As the first mate of an Emperor's crew, Beckman possesses immense combat prowess and experience. He is a powerful fighter with superb combat effectiveness, agility, and physical strength. Early in the series, he effortlessly defeated an entire group of mountain bandits using only his rifle as a club and a single cigarette. His most notable feat is his confrontation with Admiral Kizaru at Marineford, where his presence alone was enough to make the admiral hesitate, demonstrating that he is considered a significant threat even to the Navy's strongest officers. Beckman is a highly skilled user of Haki. He possesses Busoshoku Haki, which he can imbue into the bullets of his flintlock rifle, making them capable of harming Logia-type Devil Fruit users like Kizaru. He is also noted for his exceptional intelligence, officially stated by the author to have the highest IQ of any character introduced in the East Blue saga. His primary weapon is a flintlock rifle, which he carries holstered at his waist and uses for both long-range threats and as a blunt instrument in close-quarters combat.
