Description
Gally, also known as Crescent-Moon Gally, is the captain of the Gally Pirates and a character with a unique history that stretches back to the earliest concepts of the series. He first appeared as the main antagonist in the original Romance Dawn prototype, a one-shot manga that served as a forerunner to One Piece. Following this, Gally made several appearances in the anime, most notably within a filler segment of the Loguetown Arc and a loose adaptation of the Romance Dawn story. He was later officially integrated into the canon manga storyline through a brief cameo appearance following the conclusion of the Whole Cake Island Arc.
In terms of appearance, Gally is a middle-aged pirate with a strongly angular face. His most defining physical trait is his prominent handlebar mustache, which extends beyond his face in two thin, crescent-shaped strips that are the source of his epithet. He typically wears the traditional attire of a pirate captain, including an epaulette longcoat and a bicorne hat adorned with his own jolly roger, which features a crescent moon and a skull. His design has seen several variations over the years; in his original prototype appearance, he had orange-red hair, while his anime filler version depicted him as a tall, lanky man with gray hair and a matching crescent-shaped goatee. His modern canon design largely reverts to the original prototype’s concept but incorporates the color scheme from his anime filler appearance.
Gally’s personality is characterized by rudeness, impatience, and a deep-seated cruelty. When he appears at the Baratie restaurant, he and his crew behave disrespectfully, loudly and continuously demanding food rather than waiting like ordinary customers. In adaptations of the Romance Dawn story, his personality is shown to be even more malicious and prideful. He is entirely willing to kill and destroy for his own personal gain, showing no regard for the lives of innocent townspeople. After being humiliated by Monkey D. Luffy, he becomes consumed by a desire for revenge and vows to kill the young pirate someday, though Luffy himself sincerely doubts this will ever happen.
His motivations are largely driven by selfish ambition and a perceived need for recognition. He proclaims a desire to become the King of the Pirates, yet his actions are those of a common bully and thief, such as raiding towns for supplies and treasure. Gally’s role in the wider story is that of an early, minor obstacle. He serves as an antagonist to test Luffy’s resolve in the prototype stories and provides a brief moment of comic relief in the canon narrative when he is easily dispatched by Captain Smoker, who had hoped to capture the much more notorious Luffy instead. Later, his cameo at the Baratie serves to highlight the Straw Hat Pirates’ rising infamy in contrast to his own continued mediocrity.
Gally’s key relationships are primarily antagonistic. He holds a bitter rivalry with Monkey D. Luffy, who effortlessly defeats him and his crew on multiple occasions. This rivalry stems from Gally’s wounded pride and his desire for revenge. He also has a brief but memorable encounter with Marine Captain Smoker, who defeats and captures him without any difficulty, expressing disappointment that Gally was not the pirate he was truly looking for.
There is little to no character development for Gally in the canon storyline, where he remains a static and unimpressive figure. However, in the original prototype Romance Dawn story, a very different fate awaits him. In that version, after being defeated by Luffy and swearing revenge, Gally is seen years later serving as a member of Luffy’s own pirate crew. This suggests that his encounter with Luffy fundamentally changed his outlook, transforming him from a violent Morgaina pirate into a more peaceful Peace Main, aligning with Luffy's stated desire to recruit only the latter type of pirate.
Regarding his abilities, Gally is consistently portrayed as a fairly weak pirate, especially when compared to the main characters of the series. He wields a sword in combat, but his skill with it is unremarkable. His overall strength is such that he and his entire crew were easily and quickly subdued by Captain Smoker. In the Romance Dawn story, he demonstrates a degree of cunning, as he is aware of the powers and weaknesses of Devil Fruit users; he tactically tries to drown Luffy by tossing his straw hat into the ocean, knowing that a Devil Fruit user like Luffy cannot swim. Ultimately, despite his bounty of 5,000,000 Berry, he is no match for Luffy, who easily destroys his ship and sends him flying. Gally is, in essence, a typical pirate found in the relatively peaceful East Blue, whose bark is far worse than his bite.
