Description
Corby, also known as Koby or Coby, is a character whose journey forms one of the most dramatic transformations in his world. He begins as a timid and cowardly boy with no allies, serving as an unwilling pirate ship caretaker for the Alvida Pirates after accidentally boarding their vessel. His early life was defined by fear and servitude, robbing him of all hope of escape and crushing his childhood dream of joining the Marines. His only redeeming quality in the eyes of his captors was his skill as a navigator.

Corby’s entire life changes upon meeting Monkey D. Luffy, who emerges from a barrel on Alvida’s ship. Despite initially finding Corby’s cowardice pathetic, Luffy’s unwavering optimism and single-minded pursuit of his own dream rekindle a similar conviction in the downtrodden cabin boy. This encounter gives Corby the courage to openly defy his captors, leading to his liberation. He briefly travels with Luffy, acting as a temporary navigator, and is inspired to finally pursue his original goal of joining the Marines.

Physically, Corby undergoes a remarkable transformation. Initially portrayed as short, chubby, and wearing round-frame glasses, he grows dramatically under the harsh tutelage of Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp. He becomes tall, lean, and muscular, standing nearly as tall as Luffy. He gains a distinctive cross-shaped scar above his right eye from his intense training. While he retains his pink hair, it grows longer and shaggier. He adopts the habit of wearing his glasses pushed up on his forehead, and as a Marine officer, he wears a standard blue jacket, a patterned bandanna, and later a senior officer's coat with the word justice emblazoned on the back.

Corby’s personality evolves from extreme fearfulness to principled bravery. While he remains polite, self-effacing, and easily moved to tears, he has developed immense confidence and resolve. He does not act with reckless bravado but rather on a strong moral compunction, repeatedly putting his life on the line for what he believes is right. His naive belief in the absolute integrity of the Marines is shattered early on, but this only strengthens his determination to become, in his own words, a real Marine. Despite his growing power and fame, he remains remarkably humble, often deflecting praise for his heroic actions. His core motivation is a genuine desire to protect innocent people and embody an ideal form of justice, contrasting with the more absolute or corrupt versions seen in other characters.

Key relationships define his path. His mentor, Garp, recognizes his potential and subjects him and his comrade Helmeppo to brutal training, forging them into formidable officers. Corby deeply admires Garp, acknowledging that he would not have achieved his position without him. His relationship with Helmeppo begins with animosity but develops into a strong, loyal friendship as they train and serve together. Most significantly, his bond with Luffy endures despite them being on opposite sides of the law. They consider each other friends, and Corby continues to admire Luffy’s strength, even as he acknowledges they will eventually have to fight.

Corby’s role in the story is that of a persistent, evolving ally and occasional friendly adversary to the protagonists. He serves as a narrative counterpoint, showing the perspective of a heroic figure within the Marines. His development is rapid and consistent. After joining the Marines as a chore boy, he is noticed by Garp and taken to headquarters for training. He reunites with Luffy at Water 7, having achieved the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer and learned to use Soru, one of the Rokushiki techniques. During the Summit War of Marineford, his sense of justice reaches a peak. Overwhelmed by the senseless slaughter using his newly awakened Observation Haki, he stands in front of Admiral Akainu to halt the massacre, a moment of such courage that it allows Luffy to escape and earns praise from the pirate Red-Haired Shanks.

After a two-year timeskip, Corby has risen to the rank of Captain and is a member of the secret Marine special forces unit SWORD. He becomes known as Corby the Hero for his actions during the Rocky Port Incident, an event that also results in the Cross Guild assigning him a substantial five-star bounty, worth five hundred million berries, due to his threat level. His capture by the Blackbeard Pirates leads to a major rescue mission by his mentor Garp and fellow SWORD members, from which he eventually escapes. His abilities have grown to match his reputation. He is a master of several Rokushiki techniques, including Soru, Geppo, and Rankyaku. His physical strength is immense, allowing him to shatter metal and redirect torpedoes with his bare hands. He is a highly skilled user of Observation Haki, capable of sensing the presence and emotions of others across vast distances, and has also demonstrated proficiency in Armament Haki, using it to deliver powerful, named attacks.
