TV-Series
Description
Kentarou Habara is a recurring character in the Boogiepop series, known for his role as a highly capable hacker and a steadfast ally to Nagi Kirima. He is a tall young man with short, spiky black hair and black eyes, and he typically dresses in casual clothing such as a black jacket over a red shirt and blue jeans. His background is rooted in delinquency; during his high school days, he began hacking into companies and stealing their data to sell on the black market, viewing it as a challenge and justifying it by the companies’ own lack of security. This activity nearly led to his arrest, but he was saved by Nagi, who installed a virus on his computer to alert him to police surveillance. After meeting her, he began working alongside her, driven by a deep and unrequited love that motivates most of his actions.
Personality-wise, Habara is decisive and direct, often acting on impulse to solve problems rather than waiting for instructions. He is portrayed as outgoing and more socially forward than his friend Shirou Tanaka, once laughing openly at a classmate while Shirou tried to de-escalate. Despite his competence, he harbors a frustration that Nagi refuses to let him participate in dangerous missions out of fear he will be hurt. He misinterprets this protection as a lack of faith in his abilities and constantly tries to prove himself by tackling incidents on his own. His primary motivation is to prove his worth to Nagi and to be by her side when she eventually confronts the Towa Organization.
His role in the story becomes particularly prominent during the King of Distortion arc, set in a mysterious structure called the Moon Temple. When the King of Distortion traps everyone inside the building within psychological illusions, Habara is confronted with a vision of Nagi. However, he is unique among the victims because he quickly recognizes the illusion, realizes he is trapped in a dream, and successfully forces himself to wake up. This act of will demonstrates his sharp intellect and resilience, making him the key figure in countering the entity's power during that crisis. After waking himself, he works to wake others and navigate the dangers of the temple.
Habara maintains several key relationships. He is best friends with Shirou Tanaka, a bond that dates back to elementary school, and he often relies on Shirou's reliability despite considering himself the more outgoing of the pair. He also forms a close, family-like relationship with Masaki Taniguchi and Kotoe Kinukawa. His most significant relationship is with Nagi Kirima, whom he loves and prioritizes above all else.
In terms of notable abilities, Habara is first and foremost a genius hacker with exceptional skills in information gathering. Beyond his technical prowess, he is also physically capable and skilled in martial arts, with some sources noting his fighting abilities exceed those of his ally Masaki Taniguchi. Over the course of the narrative, particularly following the events of the King of Distortion arc, he inherits resources and assets from the late eccentric billionaire Kyouichirou Teratsuki. This inheritance allows him to provide substantial logistical and intelligence support to Nagi in her ongoing fight against the Towa Organization. At times, he operates under the alias Sidekick to conceal his activities while posing as an agent of the Towa Organization.
