Description
Nobunobu Tokugawa, also known as Hitotsubashi Nobunobu, is a character who appears during the fourth season of Gintama and in later arcs. He is the son of Hitotsubashi Narinari, a member of a branch family of the Tokugawa clan. His background is rooted in political rivalry: the Hitotsubashi faction, to which he belongs, opposed the ruling Tokugawa faction that placed Tokugawa Shigeshige as the fourteenth shogun. Nobunobu was groomed from a young age to eventually take the throne himself, and he was involved in an assassination attempt against Shigeshige by poisoning his teacup. Following Shigeshige's death, the shadowy organization known as the Tendoshuu intervened to establish the Hitotsubashi faction as the new leadership, and Nobunobu ascended to become the fifteenth shogun of Edo.

Nobunobu’s personality is marked by extreme egotism, sadism, and a deep sense of entitlement. He considers himself part of an elite class that is completely separate from ordinary people and expects unquestioning obedience from those around him. His upbringing in a privileged and scheming environment fostered a megalomaniacal worldview, and he often treats others with cruelty and disdain. His motivations are primarily driven by a desire for power and control, as well as a wish to make Japan a superpower that does not rely on the Amanto, following the ambitions of his faction.

In the story, Nobunobu serves as a major antagonist during the events leading up to and including the Rakuyou Arc. His role is that of a political enemy who seeks to consolidate his authority and eliminate any threats to his rule, particularly those loyal to the previous shogun. He clashes with the main characters, including Gintoki, Hijikata, and others who oppose his methods. Despite his high position, he is not a physically formidable combatant; his power comes from his political office and the influence of his faction. He is shown to be easily overwhelmed in direct confrontation, such as when he is struck by a punch from Gintoki that sends him flying.

Key relationships include his father Narinari, his association with the Hitotsubashi faction, and his complex interactions with the remnants of the Tokugawa family, such as Shigeshige and Soyo-hime. He is also connected to the Tendoshuu, who installed him as shogun. Over the course of the series, Nobunobu undergoes some development. While initially portrayed as a purely selfish and cruel figure, later arcs, such as the Rakuyou and Silver Soul arcs, reveal moments of vulnerability and a degree of growth. For instance, during a crisis on a spaceship, he freezes in fear when imagining his former retainers as attackers, but he is rescued by Mutsu and Sakamoto. This experience and subsequent events lead to a subtle shift in his perspective, though he remains a largely self-serving character. His notable abilities are limited to his political cunning and authority rather than any combat prowess. He relies on his status as shogun to command others and further his goals, making him a dangerous adversary through influence rather than personal strength.
