Description
Enshou is a character introduced in the final story arc of Gintama, known as the Silver Soul Arc. He holds the title of the warrior prince of the planet Burei and is famously referred to as the Gunpowder Prince. After the destruction of his home planet, he becomes one of the founding leaders of the Altana Liberation Army, an organization initially formed to rebel against the rule of the Tendoshuu, the mysterious immortal beings who controlled the galaxy.
Enshou's personality is defined by a deep, all-consuming grief and a profound sense of guilt, which manifest as a cold and ruthless determination on the battlefield. Motivated chiefly by the love he held for his late wife, his actions are driven more by the sorrow resulting from her death than by the initial political goals of the army he helped create. Beneath his exterior as a powerful and seemingly unshakeable warrior lies a man who is fundamentally broken, seeking purpose in endless conflict because he can no longer face a life without the family he lost.
The character's motivations are rooted in a tragic and morally complex backstory. Before the events of the series, Enshou was deeply in love with a woman who was originally married to his older brother. Consumed by his desire for her, Enshou made the conscious decision to ignore his brother's distress call when his ship was attacked, allowing him to die so that Enshou could take his place at her side. He later married her, and she became pregnant with their child. However, the immense guilt of his betrayal caused him to distance himself, spending most of his time away at war. When an Altana incident orchestrated by Utsuro destroyed his home planet, his wife and unborn child were killed. Knowing that his true targets, the Tendoshuu, were already gone, Enshou's grief turned into a suicidal drive for vengeance, redirecting the Altana Liberation Army's goal from liberation to the total annihilation of Earth.
In the story, Enshou serves as one of the primary antagonists of the final season. He leads the massive Altana Liberation Army fleet in an invasion of Earth. He initially presents a facade of being open to negotiation with representatives like Kotarou Katsura and Tatsuma Sakamoto, but he quickly reveals his true intentions, imprisoning them and revealing that he has kept the mutilated bodies of the Tendoshuu a secret to fuel the army's desire for war. His actions drive the plot toward a climactic battle for Earth's survival, as he prepares to use a powerful weapon called the Flame of Kagutsuchi to destroy the planet, believing that only through such destruction can he find an end to his own pain.
Enshou's key relationships are few but defining. His most significant relationship is with his late wife, whose memory he both cherishes and is haunted by, as his love for her was built on an act of fratricide. He shares a complex history with Shijaku, who was once his rival from another planet but later becomes his ally and fellow leader in the Altana Liberation Army. The two have a deep, unspoken understanding of war, though Shijaku is more honorable and eventually turns against Enshou's destructive plan. On the battlefield, Enshou directly opposes the Earth's defenders, particularly engaging in significant combat against Kotarou Katsura and Tatsuma Sakamoto.
Enshou undergoes a notable, though abrupt, development in his final moments. Throughout most of the arc, he is resolute in his suicidal mission to destroy Earth. However, after being defeated in combat by Katsura, Sakamoto, and Shinsuke Takasugi, his desire for endless war wavers. Severely injured, he concedes defeat and orders the halt of the weapon meant to destroy Earth, deciding to help end the war instead of perpetuating it. This sudden shift towards redemption is cut short when he is fatally stabbed by one of his own subordinates, a soldier who believed that the end of the war would leave them with no purpose, reflecting the very nihilism that had consumed Enshou himself.
In terms of combat abilities, Enshou is considered one of the most formidable warriors in the universe. He is a master of dual wielding, skillfully fighting with two beam sabers simultaneously. These sabers are specially designed so that the hilts can be joined together at the bottom to form a powerful double-bladed staff-like weapon, which he can wield with devastating efficiency. In this configuration, the weapon is also capable of launching projectile energy beams. His proficiency is such that he is described as a "one-man army," a hero of Burei said to be as mighty as ten thousand soldiers on the battlefield. He proves his incredible skill by holding his own against and wounding multiple high-level fighters at once, including Kotarou Katsura, Tatsuma Sakamoto, and even the alien creature Elizabeth.
