Description
Canopy is a minor Autobot character who appears in the film Transformers: The Last Knight, serving as a tragic figure who meets his end early in the story. He is an Autobot refugee hiding out in the ruins of Chicago, a city left devastated by previous battles between the Autobots and Decepticons.

In terms of physical appearance, Canopy shares the same body-type as the Decepticon Long Haul from earlier films, though he is distinguished by a yellow color scheme and a different head design. His most distinctive feature is his method of camouflage; rather than transforming into a vehicle like most Transformers, Canopy disguises himself as a pile of rubble. He carries a jury-rigged dome or mound of debris and concrete armor that he can retreat underneath to hide, a tactic born from necessity in a world where Transformers are hunted by human military forces. This unique approach to concealment gives him his name, as he quite literally becomes a canopy or shelter.

Canopy's personality is defined by his role as a protective guardian. He has taken in two companions, a young orphaned human girl named Izabella and a small, damaged Autobot named Sqweeks. Canopy has been caring for Izabella since her parents were murdered by Decepticons years before the events of the film. He appears to be a gentle soul who prioritizes the safety of others over his own well-being, demonstrating a nurturing and selfless nature.

The character's primary motivation is survival and the protection of those under his care. Living in the hazardous Chicago quarantine zone, Canopy seeks only to provide a safe haven for Izabella and Sqweeks, avoiding conflict with the Transformers Reaction Force, the military organization dedicated to hunting down all Transformers regardless of faction. Unlike many Autobots who actively fight against the Decepticons, Canopy seems focused purely on sheltering his small family.

Canopy's role in the story, though brief, is significant for establishing the plight of Izabella and the dangerous world that Transformers and their human allies inhabit. When a group of human children trespass into the Chicago ruins and are chased by the TRF, Izabella leads them to Canopy for shelter. Canopy helps shield the children, but in doing so, he exposes himself. The TRF is initially reluctant to attack because of the children's proximity and because they cannot verify his faction alignment. However, once Canopy moves away from the children and urges them to follow him to safety, the TRF commander orders an airstrike. A missile from a jet strikes Canopy in the chest, mortally wounding him. In his final moments, Canopy implores Izabella to run and thanks her for her companionship before dying. His death serves as a catalyst for Izabella's subsequent alliance with the film's protagonist, Cade Yeager.

Regarding key relationships, Canopy's most important connection is with Izabella, whom he has raised and protected for years. He is also close to Sqweeks, the small Vespa-transforming Autobot who accompanies them. His death profoundly affects Izabella, who is reluctant to leave his side even as TRF forces close in.

In terms of development, Canopy undergoes no arc or change within the film, as he is killed shortly after being introduced. His purpose is largely to generate pathos for the audience and for Izabella, establishing the stakes of a world where even benevolent Autobots are not safe from human persecution.

Notable abilities include his unique camouflage technique, which allows him to disguise himself as a pile of rubble and shelter multiple humans beneath his bulk. His debris dome provides both concealment and physical protection from the elements and potentially from attacks. Early concept art for the character, who was initially referred to by the placeholder name Ruins Bot, depicted him with a subway train alternate mode. This concept was ultimately abandoned in favor of his final design as a stationary shelter-bot.
