Description
Mikado Ryuugamine transfers to Ikebukuro as a high school student, heeding his childhood friend Masaomi Kida's invitation and seeking escape from a dull life, drawn by the city's allure of excitement. Initial warnings about Ikebukuro's dangers, including the mysterious gang "Dollars," clash with his direct encounter with the supernatural urban legend, the Headless Rider.

His outward passivity conceals a profound craving for significance, motivating him to co-found the anonymous online gang Dollars with Masaomi. This act stems from a desire to influence his surroundings, though he initially remains hidden, letting the gang expand organically without direct leadership. The Dollars' lack of formal structure proves both a strength and a vulnerability as external conflicts intensify.

After the Yellow Scarves conflict resolves, a period of calm shatters with new destabilizing forces emerging in Ikebukuro. Mikado grows increasingly frustrated with the Dollars' trajectory, especially as members engage in unsanctioned violent acts like assaults on the Toramaru gang, actions that tarnish the gang's name and provoke retaliatory threats. Feeling powerless to control the escalating chaos through his original anonymous methods, he experiences deep internal conflict about his role.

Aoba Kuronuma, leader of the Blue Squares, exploits Mikado's disillusionment and isolation, proposing Mikado assume leadership of the Blue Squares. This offer coincides with Mikado's realization that his passive approach with the Dollars has failed. Accepting Aoba's proposition marks a pivotal strategic shift towards active, visible control. This decision risks irreparable damage to his core relationships with Masaomi and Anri Sonohara, aligning him more directly with confrontational methods.

His choices during this phase significantly fuel renewed instability across Ikebukuro. Framed murders, targeted vendettas between gangs, and the manipulation of volatile figures like Shizuo Heiwajima by external forces such as Izaya Orihara ignite interconnected crises. Mikado's actions, driven by a transformed understanding of power and control, become a key catalyst in the city's descent into chaos.
