Description
Joe Higan, also known by his original name Joe Logan, is the protagonist of the story. He is a former ninja, a Nukenin, who abandoned his clan and its violent traditions to build a peaceful life for himself in rural America. To completely sever ties with his past, he adopted the alias Joe Logan, radically changed his appearance using a special device, and settled down with his family, hiding from the organization that once controlled him.

In this new life, Joe is a devoted husband and father, living on a quiet farm with his wife, Mari, and their young son, Ren, whom he knows as Kyle. This existence is brutally shattered when assassins from his former clan track him down. In a single, violent night, his family is murdered, and Joe himself is left for dead, suffering wounds that should have been fatal. However, he survives, and from that moment, his personality is almost entirely consumed by a grim, focused resolve for revenge. The gentle family man is replaced by a relentless and ferocious warrior who re-emerges as Ninja Kamui, an identity defined by his singular mission to destroy the clan and everyone responsible.

Despite the overwhelming rage and sorrow that drive him, Joe retains a sharp, practical intelligence. He is not a mindless killer; his actions are calculated, from contacting the FBI to gain intelligence on his enemies to methodically dismantling his former organization piece by piece. He is taciturn and direct, leaving little room for hesitation or negotiation when it comes to his violent quest. His stoicism can make him seem cold, but it masks a deep well of pain and a protective instinct that now manifests as vengeance for his lost loved ones.

His role in the story is that of the avenger. The narrative follows his bloody and relentless journey as he pits his ancient ninja skills against a modern world of advanced technology and corporate corruption represented by the AUZA company. His primary motivations are retribution and justice for his wife and son, as well as destroying the clan that forced him back into the life he tried to escape. He seeks not only to kill the individual assassins but to bring down the entire system that enabled their actions, including the clan's leader, Yamaji, and the tech CEO Joseph.

Key relationships shape his journey. His wife Mari, also a former ninja, was his partner both in their previous life and in their attempt to find peace; her death is the primary catalyst for his quest. His son Kyle represents the innocent future that was stolen from him. His former clan master, Yamaji, is his primary antagonist, the man who ordered the attack and views Joe as a threat to the clan's secrecy. Another crucial figure is Zai, a fellow ninja who was once a close comrade of Joe and Mari. Zai feels deeply betrayed by Joe's abandonment and pursues him with a personal, hate-fueled vengeance of his own, making their conflict one of the most emotionally charged in the series. Additionally, Joe develops a tense, situational alliance with FBI agents Mike Moriss and Emma Samanda, who are investigating the same string of ninja-related murders, though Joe's goal remains strictly personal.

Throughout the story, Joe begins as a man trying to bury his former self, but the tragedy forces him to fully embrace it. His character development involves confronting the full scale of his past, including the bonds he severed, and using everything he once rejected to fuel his purpose. He evolves from a man seeking a quiet life into a terrifyingly efficient engine of destruction, grappling with the cost of his revenge and the harsh realities of his clan's betrayal.

As a warrior, Joe Higan possesses extraordinary abilities rooted in his ninja training. His combat skills are superhuman, demonstrating incredible speed, agility, and lethal proficiency with a blade. He is easily able to dispatch entire teams of trained assassins and cyborgs, proving his strength to be far beyond that of an ordinary ninja.

His most notable and dangerous ability is a secret ninja art known as the Secret Stark of Awareness. This technique manifests as a supernatural, smoke-like power that he can release to disorient his opponents and drastically enhance his own combat abilities. While immensely powerful, this ability is also a double-edged sword; using it more than once in a short period takes a massive, debilitating toll on his body. His ability to survive a fatal attack and seemingly return from death is also a mystery that his former clan seeks to understand, suspecting he used an unknown secret art to revive himself. He is a 21st-century ninja who adapts his ancient skills to defeat enemies who rely on high-tech cybernetic enhancements and modern firepower, proving that his traditional training, honed by sheer will, is a force to be reckoned with.
