TV-Series
Description
Kirishima is a Kongou-class fast battleship of the Fleet of Fog, partnered with her sister ship Haruna. As a sentient vessel, she projects a mental model resembling a young woman with brown hair and blue or violet eyes. Her initial attire varies: conservative clothing in the manga, punk-inspired and asymmetrical garments in the anime.
She wields extensive armaments: photon cannons, missile launchers, torpedo tubes, and a Super-Graviton Cannon. A unique ability allows her to discharge underwater energy shockwaves via specialized antennae. She also executes a combined attack with Haruna, merging their vessels to form a more potent Super-Graviton Cannon; however, this leaves them vulnerable if destabilized during charging.
Her personality starts as arrogant and impatient, especially evident during the Yokosuka port assault. She prioritizes overwhelming force and expresses frustration when Haruna focuses on cataloging human language over combat. After her vessel is sunk by I-401 and the human submarine Hakugei, her core survives. Haruna later integrates her into a teddy bear named "Yotarou," crafted to avoid suspicion for Makie Osakabe. This bear has a pink body with beige accents and heart motifs on its abdomen and forehead.
Post-defeat, Kirishima shows less arrogance but retains impatience and cynicism. She develops a teasing rapport with Haruna, nicknaming her "Haruharu" – a habit adopted from Makie. Protecting Makie during a military raid on the Osakabe mansion, Kirishima actively switches roles with Haruna to engage and neutralize sniper teams. She later intervenes to stop Haruna from deploying Maya’s weaponry on nearby cities after Professor Osakabe’s death, though initially unsuccessful.
Accompanying Haruna and Makie to the Northern region capital, Kirishima remains in her teddy bear form. Beneath the bear's head, her human-like head is partially visible. She tolerates Makie's frequent cuddling and supports Haruna's investigation into the Yokosuka Facility #4 fire at Makoto Osakabe's suggestion.
In spin-off media like the "Kiri-Kuma" shorts, Kirishima's teddy bear form features in comedic scenarios. These include failed attempts to merge ("gattai") with Haruna and humorous interactions about body image or word definitions. Merchandise depicts this form with slight articulation and sound effects activated by pressing the head.
Kirishima shares a sisterly bond with Haruna, views Maya as temporary transport, and tolerates Makie while maintaining her primary emotional connection with Haruna. Initially targeting I-401, she later accepts a loose alliance, though her teddy bear form causes embarrassment during encounters. Her role evolves from frontline combatant to protector and reluctant participant in human affairs, adapting to new circumstances while retaining core traits like combat pragmatism and loyalty to Haruna.
