Description
Brushbuddy, known in Japanese as Fudemushi, is a small magical creature from the manga and anime series Witch Hat Atelier. The name Brushbuddy is a direct reference to its appearance and behavior, combining the words for inkbrush and bug. This character belongs to a species of the same name, sometimes also called brushbugs, which are known for their soft, fluffy fur that can come in a range of colors from white to black and striped patterns. Brushbuddy has a small torso, four short stubby legs, and a notably long and thick tail. This particular Brushbuddy was originally living in the wild at the Dadah Range before encountering the young witch-in-training Coco. During Coco's Consent of the Crown test, the two met, and after the test was completed, Brushbuddy returned with her to Qifrey's Atelier, becoming a permanent resident there.

The personality of Brushbuddy is not deeply complex, and the character often serves as a source of comedic relief within the atelier. As is natural for its species, Brushbuddy is strongly attracted to the scent of magical ink, which is a primary reason for its interest in staying close to the apprentices and their work. This attraction can sometimes lead to mischief, as brushbuddies are known to dip themselves into bottles of unattended ink and then roam around, leaving a trail of messes with their ink-coated underbellies. Despite this slightly troublesome habit, Brushbuddy is described as being friendly by nature and has formed a clear attachment to Coco and the other members of the atelier. While generally amiable, Brushbuddy can become a little annoyed when someone pets or hugs it too much, showing a small hint of personal space preference.

In terms of its role in the story, Brushbuddy primarily acts as a small, pet-like companion and a resident of Qifrey's atelier. Its presence adds a layer of warmth and everyday life to the setting. The character is often seen in the company of Richeh, one of the other apprentice witches, suggesting that a particular bond has formed between the two of them. A notable and somewhat humorous piece of development for the character is revealed in an extra chapter of the manga. It is said that Brushbuddy is attempting to write a journal based on the daily behavior and activities of Coco and the others, though this endeavor has been without success. This small detail adds a layer of endearing personality, implying a quiet curiosity about the human world. The character has also appeared on the cover of the seventh volume of the manga, highlighting its status as a beloved member of the main cast. Another brushbuddy, this one with black fur, appears later in the series as the pet of another character named Eolio Ezrest.

The notable abilities of Brushbuddy are tied directly to its nature as a magical creature. Its most defining trait is its powerful attraction to magic ink, which dictates much of its behavior and its reason for staying near witches. Beyond this instinctual draw, Brushbuddy does not demonstrate any active magical powers. Its physical characteristics include being covered in soft, fluffy fur, which is a key part of its cute and appealing design. The creature is also known to eat a diet of nuts, berries, and occasionally fish, which are typical foods for its species in the wild.
