Description
Iona functions as the Mental Model for the sentient Fleet of Fog submarine I-401, which defected to humanity. Emerging from the core of the supreme flagship Yamato before its sinking by Musashi, Iona received Yamato's final directive compelling her to locate and obey Chihaya Gunzou as his vessel.
She manifests physically as a young girl possessing silver hair and green eyes, typically maintaining a calm and quiet demeanor. Her standard attire differs between media adaptations: the manga shows her in casual clothing like printed t-shirts and denim shorts, while the anime features a distinctive navy uniform with white trim. As a Mental Model, she generates numbered duplicates to perform tasks aboard the submarine.
Her primary function involves operating the I-401 under Gunzou's command. This submarine measures 122 meters long, displaces 6,575 tons submerged, and achieves speeds up to 80 knots. Its armament encompasses torpedo tubes, photon cannons, missile launchers, and a salvaged Super-Graviton Cannon upgraded after defeating the battleship Hyuuga. Uniquely among Fog vessels, I-401 employs three Seiran bomber drones offensively, demonstrated in Chapter 72. Internally, it contains human-functional spaces such as a bridge and crew quarters, despite lacking operational necessity for an AI-controlled vessel.
Iona's personality reveals subtle development. Initially focused solely on obeying Gunzou, she gradually engages in human activities like cooking, cleaning, and watching anime. While generally stoic, she displays dry sarcasm in the manga and occasional discomfort when Hyuuga expresses obsessive admiration. A minor habit involves her fiddling with encountered starfish.
Critical developments include the Chapter 53 discovery that Iona embodies the Fleet of Fog's Joint Tactical Network, a role she remains unconsciously unaware of. Accessing this network alters her appearance: her hair darkens, and she dons a traditional Yamato-style dress marked with Fog insignia. During the *Cadenza* movie events, she merges with Yamato's residual consciousness to defeat Musashi. Following this, she temporarily vanishes after fulfilling her core purpose but later returns to Gunzou.
Her relationships center on unwavering loyalty to Gunzou, creating conflict when his survival jeopardizes missions, such as her prioritizing saving him over completing a torpedo delivery. She maintains professional rapport with the human crew, including sonar operator Shizuka Hazumi and engineer Iori Watanuki. Interactions with former Fog vessels like Hyuuga and Takao range from tolerant to strategically cooperative.
