Description
Garm, also known as Garm Urban or Garm Ulban, is a character from the anime and manga series Ragna Crimson. He is an elderly man who serves as the First Chief Swordsman of the Argentum Corps and holds the title of the strongest warrior within the organization, a fact acknowledged by fellow member Isaac Starn. Recognized by the nickname Bladewolf or Sword Wolf, his appearance is that of an aged swordsman with light grey hair and green eyes that he often keeps partly closed, typically wearing the standard armor of the Corps with a long silverine sword at his hip. His backstory involves winning a tournament that led to his position as leader of the Silverware Army, and he was also the one who taught swordsmanship to a young Starlia Reze.

In terms of personality, Garm is a dedicated and hardworking individual who believes that true strength is forged through rigorous practice and hard work rather than innate talent. He carries himself with the pride befitting the top swordsman of his group, is very close to his comrades, and has a particularly strong bond with Princess Starlia, whom he regards almost like a niece. Despite his age, he possesses a venerable character that allows him to become one of the first in the Corps to befriend Ragna. However, he is not without his moments of insecurity and sadness, especially when faced with defeat or the emotional fallout of Starlia's affections.

Garm's primary motivation is his dedication to the Argentum Corps and his role as a mentor and protector. This drive becomes more complex after his encounter with the dragon slayer Ragna. Following a decisive and humiliating defeat at Ragna's hands, Garm falls into a brief period of depression. Yet, he is able to perceive that Ragna's overwhelming strength is not a result of pure talent but of relentless training that pushed him beyond human limits. This realization rekindles his resolve, and he sets a new personal goal: to become the first human to reach the same level of power as Ragna, constantly observing the boy's abilities to learn from them.

Within the story's narrative, Garm plays a significant role as a foundational pillar of strength for the human side. He delivered the final blow in the battle against the dragon Dornea, showcasing his value as a fighter. However, his quick defeat by Ragna upon the latter's arrival serves as a narrative device to immediately establish Ragna's immense power relative to even the best of humanity. As the story progresses, his role shifts from being the strongest warrior to a determined student and persistent rival to Ragna. In the final battle against the Winged Bloodline, Garm faces the superior dragon Olto Zora. Despite being fatally overpowered when his opponent enters a 300% Madness state and perishing in the fight, his actions serve a critical purpose; he provides a crucial shield for his comrade Shin Cutlass, preventing an instant death and allowing the younger fighter to continue the battle.

Garm's most significant relationship is with Princess Starlia Reze, whose swordsmanship master he is. His protective and affectionate nature toward her is highlighted by his depression upon learning that she has fallen in love with Ragna. He also shares a key relationship with the young swordsman Shin Cutlass, who initially becomes hostile toward Ragna upon hearing of Garm's defeat, indicating the respect and loyalty Garm commands. Garm himself acts as a mentor and guardian to Shin, ultimately sacrificing himself to protect him. In his interactions with Ragna, their relationship evolves from brief antagonist and depressed veteran to one of mutual respect where Garm becomes a persistent challenger and student, even encouraging Ragna to continue inspiring others with his perseverance and strength.

In terms of development, Garm undergoes a clear arc from being a respected, established master to a humbled learner. His defeat by Ragna acts as a catalyst, forcing him to abandon any complacency and rededicate himself to growth. He repeatedly challenges Ragna to duels, motivated by the desire to close the gap between them. His persistence allows him to eventually secure a single victory against Ragna after their 70th duel, a moment that also allows him to admonish Ragna for refusing help, showing his growth into a character who not only seeks personal power but also contributes to the development of those around him. His death is not just an end but a final act of duty and pride as a member of the brigade, cementing his legacy as a warrior who gave everything for his comrades.

Regarding notable abilities, Garm is an exceptionally skilled swordsman whose prowess allows his body and sword to move as if they are one entity, a quality Princess Starlia specifically notes. He is considered the strongest swordsman in the country and holds the title of First Chief Swordsman, having won a tournament to prove his skill. He wields a long silverine sword, a metal effective against dragons, and is proficient enough to land a decisive final blow on a dragon like Dornea. His abilities allow him to hold his own against powerful enemies before ultimately falling to superior dragon forces, and he serves as a benchmark for strength within the Argentum Corps.
