Description
Gunzō Chihaya, a former student of the Japanese National Maritime Institute of Technology, commands the I-401 submarine and the Blue Steel fleet with sharp strategic intellect and resolute leadership. His past is shaped by familial betrayal and personal tragedy, forging his motivations and tactical mindset. His father, Shouzou Chihaya, once hailed as a war hero for seizing the I-401, later defected to the Fleet of Fog, leaving Gunzō consumed by abandonment and a quest to unravel his father’s choices. The death of his childhood friend Kotono Amaha in Facility #4’s fire further hardened his resolve, driving him to desert his military post and claim the I-401.

This submarine, operated by the Fog Mental Model Iona, became the cornerstone of Blue Steel, a rebel faction opposing the Fog’s dominion. Gunzō’s adaptive tactics and daring gambits secured improbable victories against advanced Fog warships, including Hyuuga and Takao, who eventually allied with his fleet. His pragmatic leadership balances mission objectives with crew welfare, tested when Iona disobeyed commands to save him during a suicidal operation—a moment underscoring their symbiotic bond.

Interactions with Fog entities reveal his aptitude for maneuvering intricate relationships: managing Takao’s unresolved affections, Hyuuga’s strategic partnership, and fostering fragile coalitions that bolster Blue Steel’s strength. Beyond dismantling the blockade, Gunzō seeks coexistence between humanity and the Fog, a vision influenced by discovering Iona’s latent connection to Yamato, the Fog’s supreme flagship. This revelation ties his personal quest to existential struggles within the Fog’s hierarchy, while clashes against his father’s Scarlet Fleet and global powers manipulating Fog technology compound his challenges.

Evolving from a disillusioned cadet to a beacon of defiance, Gunzō harnesses tactical ingenuity and uneasy alliances to confront human and Fog adversaries alike. His journey intertwines redemption with bridging species divides, anchored by themes of trust, sacrifice, and the pursuit of meaning amid chaos.
