Description
Nebulim, also known as the Barrier Dragon, is a superior dragon who originally held the seventh seat and later the fourth seat within the Winged Brethren. He serves as the loyal bodyguard and devoted follower of the Winged King, Ultimatia. Nebulim was turned into a dragon by Ultimatia and made into one of the Seija, becoming her personal protector soon after. In his early days he was a quiet and unassuming follower who obeyed every command of Ultimatia and Borgius without question. However, a fateful battle with the dragon hunter Ragna deeply shook Ultimatia, and in response Nebulim underwent a complete maturation out of a desperate drive to protect her. From that point he vowed to kill Ragna at any cost.
Personality-wise, Nebulim is extremely timid, resembling a child with social anxiety. He rarely speaks in the presence of others and only offers input when absolutely necessary. Around Ultimatia he becomes more vocal, offering opinions and advice on matters that trouble her, and he is fiercely overprotective, prioritizing her safety over his own life. His devotion stems from his deep appreciation for kindness, and he views Ultimatia as someone exceptionally kind who must be shielded above all else. After the defeat of himself, Ultimatia, and Borgius, he undergoes a notable change: while still timid, he becomes willing to challenge his master’s orders if he believes it will help her, though he avoids direct confrontation out of fear of her anger. He also begins contributing more actively to strategic discussions. At the same time, he becomes obsessively fixated on Ragna, counting every second the dragon hunter remains alive and flying into a blind rage whenever Ragna is mentioned. Beneath his devotion lies a persistent loneliness, as he longs for a closer emotional bond with Ultimatia, similar to what Woltekamui shares with her, yet he cannot find a way to bridge that gap. He is also analytical, able to perceive battlefield maneuvers that even Ultimatia overlooks, such as detecting Crimson’s attempt to force her into using her trump card prematurely.
Nebulim’s primary motivation is to protect Ultimatia at all costs, and after Ragna’s attack this motivation crystallizes into a burning desire for vengeance. He also seeks to grow closer to Ultimatia, though this desire remains unfulfilled. In the story, Nebulim begins as a minor but loyal figure among the Winged Brethren, primarily creating barriers and guarding Ultimatia. During the capital arc he plays a key role in designing and maintaining the barrier surrounding the city, deciding which humans will be painlessly erased. After the fall of the Winged Bloodline, he becomes the last surviving member and eventually becomes a disciple of Gilzea, the Claw King, training under the strongest dragon king.
His most important relationship is with Ultimatia, whom he adores and serves unconditionally. He also has a complicated relationship with Borgius, the elderly Arm Dragon, who often scolds him harshly; Nebulim seeks Borgius’s approval and is deeply hurt by his criticism. His relationship with Ragna is one of pure hatred, and his obsession with the hunter defines much of his later actions. He also stands in contrast to Woltekamui, whose natural charisma and closeness to Ultimatia he envies.
Nebulim’s development is marked by a dramatic physical and psychological evolution. Initially a small, shy boy with short black hair and small horns, he matures into a massive dragon comparable to Woltekamui in size, with enlarged horns, draconic hands and feet, a thicker tail, and eyes that develop a ripple pattern. This evolution is triggered by his determination to protect Ultimatia after Ragna’s assault.
Nebulim’s notable ability is his mastery of barrier magic, for which he is called the Barrier Dragon. He is described as a magical genius, the pride of the Winged Bloodline, with a talent that has been compared favorably to Woltekamui. He can create a wide variety of barriers with different effects, including ones that erase humans without pain. Unlike most dragons, he became a full dragon instantly with no transitional stage. In his mature state, his barrier skills become even more refined, and he can sense the presence of enemies across dimensions, as shown when he detected Crimson’s World Void and swore his enemies would not escape. His analytical mind, combined with his barrier expertise, makes him a formidable defensive strategist, though his lack of combat experience and fighting sense initially limited his threat level.
