Description
Draim, also known as the Gate Dragon, is a character from the anime Farming Life in Another World. He is a male dragon who holds the crucial duty of preventing monsters from the Forest of Death from migrating southward, a role that has earned him his renowned title as the Gate Dragon. He is the eldest son and the third child of his parents, Dors and Raimeiren, placing him within a prominent dragon lineage. Draim is notable as being the first dragon that the protagonist, Hiraku Machio, ever encountered.

In his true form, Draim is an immense dragon measuring approximately thirty meters in length, a size that emphasizes his powerful and guardian-like presence. When interacting with the residents of the Great Tree Village, he often adopts a human form, appearing as a tall, middle-aged man with a demeanor that can be interpreted as timid or shy. Despite his imposing nature, his personality is marked by a certain gentleness and a reserved quality, as he struggles to start conversations when meeting people for the first time. Beneath this shy exterior, however, he is consistently depicted as caring, dependable, and a figure with a strong sense of responsibility.

His motivations are largely tied to his duty as a guardian of the southern border, a task he takes seriously. However, he is also strongly motivated by more personal pleasures. From his very first visit to the Great Tree Village, he was captivated by the quality of its food and alcohol, to the point of announcing his desire to move there permanently. He ultimately abandons this relocation plan after being advised that performing his gatekeeping duties from the village would cause significant disruption to the villagers' lives. Instead, he becomes a very frequent visitor, regularly coming to eat, drink, and share complaints about his taxing job with Hiraku, often grumbling in a friendly manner. He has a habit of bringing gifts of substantial value on each visit, far exceeding the cost of what he consumes.

Draim's role in the story is primarily as a key ally and friend to the Great Tree Village. He serves as an important logistical supporter, volunteering to use his long-distance transport capabilities for trade with other settlements like Howlin Village and for relocating groups such as the Minotaur tribe. His presence also brings a measure of security, as he is a powerful combatant capable of aerial combat. In exchange for his friendship and services, the villagers build a large villa to accommodate his frequent overnight stays. This villa, however, becomes the source of a major misunderstanding when his wife, Graffaloon, and daughter, Lastismoon, mistake it as evidence of infidelity, leading to an attack on the village that Draim must help to quell.

His key relationships define much of his character arc. He shares a strong and friendly bond with Hiraku Machio, who is his first human friend. He is married to Graffaloon, a white dragon known as the White Dragon Princess, who is noted to have playfully teased him before their marriage. He is the father of Lastismoon, and his visits to the village increase significantly after she moves there, under the pretense of seeing his daughter, before settling into a more moderate pace after the birth of his grandchildren. He has a more complicated relationship with Hakuren, a member of his family whom he actively tries to avoid after she arrives at the village, leading him to reduce the frequency of his visits. The elder Gucci also plays a crucial advisory role in his life, first suggesting he visit the Great Tree Village to avoid conflict and later discouraging him from relocating there.

Draim shows notable development in his integration into the village's social fabric. While he remains dedicated to his far-off post as a guardian, he has successfully cultivated a second life as a cherished, if sometimes troublesome, regular at the Great Tree Village. His character evolves from a solitary guardian and potential threat into a dependable ally, a frequent guest, and a family man navigating the complexities that come with his kin's relocation. A unique and obsessive trait of his is his passion for daikon. He insists on harvesting the vegetable himself during his stays at the village and dedicates considerable time to researching and experimenting with new daikon-based recipes.

As a dragon, his notable abilities are numerous. He possesses the power to shift between his massive dragon form and a human form, a skill essential for diplomacy and daily interaction. In his dragon form, he has immense physical strength, flight capability, and powerful combat skills, which he uses to counter threats like wyverns. He is also consistently relied upon as a reliable and strong transporter for goods and refugees over long distances, showcasing a utility that proves invaluable to the growing community around the Great Tree Village.
