Description
Epouvantail begins his existence as a sentient scarecrow discovered by Dorothy in a Munchkin Country cornfield. Plagued by self-doubt over his perceived lack of brains, he actively seeks intellectual fulfillment from the Wizard of Oz. Despite this insecurity, he consistently demonstrates inherent wisdom and sharp problem-solving skills during the journey to the Emerald City, frequently devising strategic solutions for the group's obstacles.
His body consists of straw stuffing encased in clothing, making him vulnerable to dismemberment. This fragility is exploited when the Wicked Witch of the West's winged monkeys rip him apart, scattering his garments into a tree. After Dorothy defeats the witch, local inhabitants recover his scattered components, restuff his apparel with fresh straw, and reconstruct him.
Upon the group's return to the Emerald City, the Wizard fulfills his wish symbolically by presenting him with a placebo: a cranial container filled with bran, pins, and needles. The Wizard then designates him as the provisional ruler of the Emerald City before departing Oz. He accepts this role, governing until General Jinjur's coup in a subsequent story arc overthrows his administration.
Following his deposition, he escapes the Emerald City and forms an alliance with Tip, Jack Pumpkinhead, and the Sawhorse. This coalition seeks Glinda the Good Witch's aid to restore the legitimate hereditary ruler, Princess Ozma, to the throne. Later, he resides in a corncob-shaped house within the Winkie Country and undertakes diplomatic missions, such as traveling to Jinxland to help depose the tyrant King Krewl.
His character evolves from an insecure figure to one widely recognized throughout Oz as a sagacious advisor and leader. He engages in frequent philosophical exchanges, particularly lively debates with the Tin Woodman regarding the relative merits of intellect versus emotion. Despite his official role as an advisor to Princess Ozma, he often prioritizes recreational pursuits like croquet, though he remains reliably committed during crises requiring collective action.
