Description
Akon serves as the Third Seat of the Twelfth Division in the Gotei 13 and holds the position of Vice President of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. Following the conclusion of the conflict with the Wandenreich, he is promoted to the rank of Lieutenant of his division. His physical appearance is distinctive and somewhat unorthodox, characterized by a high forehead, a lack of eyebrows, and three small horns on his head. He has black hair styled into a side-parted, spiky cut and is often seen wearing the standard white laboratory coat of the institute, though he also smokes regularly.

Akon's history with the Twelfth Division runs deep, originating from the Maggot's Nest, a detention center for those considered dangerous or potentially rebellious. He was among its inmates alongside his future captain, Mayuri Kurotsuchi, before being recruited by Kisuke Urahara. He has been a member of the Research and Development Institute since its very establishment, growing from a more talkative and sarcastic youth into a man defined by his composure and precision. His personality is one of his most defining traits; he is perpetually calm, collected, and analytical, even under extreme duress. This unflappable demeanor makes him a pillar of reliability for his colleagues. The only individuals known to disrupt his steady pace are his captain, Mayuri, and the former captain, Kisuke Urahara, both of whom possess similarly brilliant but erratic scientific minds.

Within the narrative of the Thousand-Year Blood War, Akon assumes a critical leadership role. When Mayuri Kurotsuchi departs for the front lines, Akon takes command of the institute. He is among the first to detect the invasion of the Wandenreich and demonstrates a willingness to act unilaterally, even bypassing formal protocols, to protect the Soul Society. During the first invasion, he makes the decisive and unauthorized call to contact Ichigo Kurosaki and Kisuke Urahara, understanding that the situation requires desperate measures. His quick thinking proves essential when Ichigo is trapped in the Garganta by the Sternritter Quilge Opie. Despite being attacked and severely injured by another Quincy, Shaz Domino, Akon successfully manages to reopen the gateway from within the institute, providing the vital opening for Ichigo to escape and return to the Seireitei.

During the second invasion, the Seireitei itself is swallowed by shadows, disabling the institute's functions and leaving Akon and his team immobilized and vulnerable. In this moment of crisis, he is forced to rely on the timely return of Captain Mayuri, who confronts the Sternritter NaNaNa Najahkoop and saves the surviving researchers. Following this, Akon returns to his duties, diligently working in a modified room to prepare the Tenshintai and the anti-Bankai medication, the "Invading Drug," for all affected captains, while also monitoring the overall battle situation. His key relationships are almost entirely professional. He has a long-standing history with Mayuri, serving as his indispensable right hand and one of the few people who can work alongside him effectively. He also shares a connection with Nemu Kurotsuchi, whom he refers to as Mayuri's greatest masterpiece, and maintains a rapport with Kisuke Urahara, contacting him for aid during the invasion.

Akon's development throughout the arc highlights his transition from a supporting scientific officer to a decisive leader capable of acting on his own judgment. While he does not engage in direct frontline combat, his contributions are entirely strategic and technical. He possesses high spiritual pressure befitting his rank, but his true abilities lie in his exceptional intellect and scientific expertise. He is renowned as a specialist in the construction of Gigai, artificial bodies used by Shinigami in the human world, demonstrating such keen insight that he could instantly recognize the unparalleled craftsmanship of a Gigai created by Urahara. In the later, canonical "Bleach: Can't Fear Your Own World" story, he also debuts a unique offensive technique called "Róng." This ability involves combining chemical vials to create a potent acid capable of rapidly dissolving an enemy's flesh, with an incantation that mimics a winning hand in mahjong. While it is presumed he possesses a Zanpakuto and the capability to use Bankai due to his eventual promotion to lieutenant, his sword has never been seen or its abilities revealed.
