Description
Chojiro Sasakibe serves as the lieutenant of the First Division in the Gotei 13, the military arm of Soul Society. He has held this post since the organization's inception, acting as the loyal subordinate to Captain-Commander Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto. Sasakibe is physically characterized by his tall, lean frame, silver-gray hair, refined European-style mustache, and distinctive white captain's coat worn over the standard shihakusho, a garment he designed himself. His appearance reflects a deep admiration for Western culture, which he developed during missions to the human world.

Sasakibe's most defining trait is his profound and unwavering loyalty to Yamamoto. Having served as the Captain-Commander's right hand for over a thousand years, he swore an oath to remain as lieutenant as long as Yamamoto lived. He is a man of quiet dignity and restraint, often appearing in the background and rarely seeking personal recognition. Despite holding a subordinate rank, he possesses abilities on par with a captain-class officer. His reserved nature and refusal to demonstrate his full power in front of others led some to mistakenly believe he was weak, though he himself was unconcerned with such perceptions.

A significant part of Sasakibe's history involves the original conflict with the Wandenreich one thousand years ago. During that first invasion, he played a decisive role by hiding among the fallen and stabbing Yhwach from behind, creating a crucial opening for Yamamoto to strike the Quincy leader. This act created a lasting grudge, as the Wandenreich never forgot the humiliation of being wounded by a mere lieutenant. Following this battle, Sasakibe sought to prove his worth to his captain by using his Bankai in a direct challenge, an attempt that ultimately failed and only resulted in a permanent scar on Yamamoto's forehead. Sasakibe continued to address his captain by an old nickname, leading Yamamoto to adopt the name "Genryusai" in an effort to acknowledge his subordinate's persistent loyalty and formality.

In the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, Sasakibe finally engages in a serious battle for the first time in the series. When the Sternritter Driscoll Berci attacks the First Division barracks, Sasakibe is forced to reveal his Bankai, Koko Gonryo Rikyu. However, a Quincy medallion is used to steal it, a capability he attempts to warn Yamamoto about before dying of his wounds. His death serves as a major catalyst, as Yamamoto is consumed by rage and a desire for revenge, leading the Captain-Commander to personally confront the enemy where he meets his own end. The moment of Sasakibe's death is treated with great ceremony; a funeral pyre is held where his secret, captain-level strength is finally revealed to the other officers. Byakuya Kuchiki pays tribute by explaining that Sasakibe had mastered his Bankai even before celebrated captains Shunsui Kyoraku and Jushiro Ukitake did, having simply chosen a life of silent service at Yamamoto's side rather than the glory of a captain's post.

Sasakibe's Zanpakuto is named Gonryomaru. Its sealed form is a standard katana, but its released forms reflect his love of Western aesthetics. The Shikai, activated by the command "Pierce," transforms the blade into a thin rapier designed for precise thrusting. The Bankai, Koko Gonryo Rikyu, drastically changes the environment by summoning dark storm clouds and a massive dome of golden lightning pillars connecting earth and sky. This ability gives him control over weather, specifically lightning generation, making him one of the few known wielders of an elemental-type Bankai aside from Toshiro Hitsugaya's Hyorinmaru. He is also proficient in Kido, capable of operating powerful barriers, and skilled in Shunpo. Perhaps his most notable practical skill is the ability to completely suppress his reiatsu, a stealth technique that allowed him, a thousand years ago, to hide in plain sight and ambush Yhwach without being detected.
