Description
Gaojun is the young emperor who rules the imperial court in the anime Raven of the Inner Palace. Having ascended to the throne after deposing the Empress Dowager, his background is marked by significant personal tragedy and political turmoil. The Empress Dowager, a malevolent force in the palace, was responsible for the murder of his mother and also killed Ding Lan, a man for whom Gaojun cared deeply. These traumatic events, including being disinherited by the Empress Dowager, shaped his resolve to take power and seek a measure of justice.

His personality stands in contrast to the secluded and emotionally reserved Raven Consort, Liu Shouxue. While he tends to keep his emotions firmly in check, he is described as pragmatic, curious, and possessing an unusually strong ethical sense for a ruler. Gaojun carries the weight of his responsibilities and the chains of command, often appearing somber as he navigates the complex politics of the court. Despite this, he is not without a sense of humor or determination; he enjoys playful banter, such as teasing Shouxue by asking if a carving is of a fat lizard, and he is persistent in his efforts to connect with her. He is also shown to be tactful and trustworthy, as demonstrated by his discrete handling of knowledge regarding Shouxue’s silver-white hair and her origins.

Gaojun’s primary motivation is to do what is right and to rectify the wrongs of the past, particularly those committed by the Empress Dowager. He seeks to reform the palace’s entrenched and often cruel customs. A key driving force in the story is his deep fascination with Liu Shouxue, the Raven Consort. He persistently breaks with tradition to seek her out, not for her expected duties, but to request her help in solving supernatural disturbances plaguing the palace. His interest is not merely political; he appears genuinely drawn to her, and he tries to bribe her with sweets and small favors in an effort to become her friend and confidant. He respects her abilities and is willing to humble himself before her to try and amend the bloody history that binds them.

In the story, Gaojun acts as the primary bridge between the isolated Raven Consort and the rest of the world. He is the one who seeks her out to investigate hauntings, which forms the episodic core of the narrative. His role evolves from a formal requester of services to a protective figure and collaborator. He values Shouxue's compassionate nature, which he sees as a soothing contrast to the strife caused by the Empress Dowager. He also shows a willingness to understand the ghosts that haunt the palace on a deeper level, once stopping Shouxue from immediately sending a spirit away because he sensed there was more to the story. His personal history with the victims of the previous regime gives him a unique insight and empathy for the spirits they encounter.

His key relationships are central to the plot. The most significant is his evolving dynamic with Liu Shouxue. What begins as a formal, master-servant relationship based on requests slowly builds into one of mutual trust, respect, and a slow-burning romance. He respects her boundaries while gently pushing against her isolation. Another defining relationship is his enmity with the Empress Dowager. Her reign of terror and the murder of his loved ones serve as the catalyst for his rise to power and his desire for a more just rule. Her final curse on him becomes a lingering problem that further intertwines his fate with Shouxue’s. He is also shown to value others, such as Ban Yingnu, a consort who showed him kindness as a child, and he seeks to bring justice for her death.

Gaojun undergoes notable development throughout the series. He begins as a ruler determined to make things right, but he learns that doing so is a complex and painful process. His relationship with Shouxue is a primary driver of his growth. He learns to be more patient, and his hope that tragedy can be prevented often wars with his understanding of a corrupt world. He directly challenges the ancient traditions that bind the Raven Consort, breaking one of the most sacred rules by insisting on seeing her and trying to free her from her fate. This act of defiance against the established order shows his willingness to risk everything for what he believes is right.

In terms of notable abilities, Gaojun’s strengths are not supernatural like Shouxue’s. Instead, his power lies in his political authority as the emperor, his intelligence, and his perceptiveness. He is skilled at navigating the intrigue of the court and uses his position to protect Shouxue and investigate mysteries. His most notable ability is his unwavering ethical conviction, which allows him to resist executing enemies without proper proof and to persist in his efforts to win Shouxue’s trust despite her initial reluctance. He can also detect when something is amiss, such as recognizing the curse the Empress Dowager placed on him.
