TV-Series
Description
Katsuya Serizawa is a powerful esper who first appears as a key member of the terrorist organization Claw, specifically as the strongest of its elite unit, the Ultimate 5. At thirty years old, Serizawa stands 181 centimeters tall and has a large, imposing build, though his demeanor is initially anything but confident.
Serizawa's background is defined by profound isolation. Unable to control his burgeoning psychic powers as a child, he lived in constant fear of hurting those around him. This fear, compounded by the rejection and bullying he faced from others, led him to make a radical decision at the age of twelve: he locked himself in his room and became a hikikomori, a complete shut-in, for the next fifteen years of his life.
His life changed when he was discovered by Toichiro Suzuki, the charismatic and ambitious leader of Claw. Suzuki gave Serizawa a special umbrella, telling him to consider the space beneath it as an extension of his safe room, which helped him control his powers and manage his anxiety about leaving home. For the first time, Serizawa felt a sense of belonging and purpose. He developed a deep loyalty to Suzuki, whom he called the Boss, and saw Claw as the company where he was finally a valued employee.
Serizawa's personality is a study in contrasts. On one hand, he is overwhelmingly powerful, possessing immense telekinetic abilities that he can channel through objects like his prized umbrella to create devastating energy blasts and impenetrable barriers. On the other hand, he is timid, gentle, and incredibly naive. Having been cut off from society and its norms for so long, he is easily deceived and lacks basic social knowledge, such as knowing who the current prime minister is. He is driven by a deep-seated need for acceptance and a desperate fear of returning to his former loneliness. This makes him highly susceptible to the influence of anyone who offers him guidance and a place to belong.
In the story, Serizawa serves as a direct foil to the protagonist, Shigeo Kageyama, known as Mob. Both are exceptionally powerful espers who have struggled with their abilities, but where Mob has a support system, Serizawa was exploited by Claw. His role shifts dramatically when he confronts Mob, who, instead of fighting, reaches out with empathy. Mob tells Serizawa that he is being used and offers him genuine friendship. This moment, combined with witnessing Suzuki's disregard for his subordinates, gives Serizawa the courage to betray Claw, using his umbrella to shield Arataka Reigen from a fatal attack and severing his loyalty to his former master.
Following the fall of Claw, Serizawa embarks on a new chapter. At Reigen's invitation, he joins the Spirits and Such Consultation Office, and his development becomes a central part of his character journey. Reigen gives him a significant makeover, cutting his messy hair, shaving his stubble, and dressing him in a professional blue suit. This external change symbolizes an internal one. Serizawa begins working as an exorcist, taking night school classes to make up for his lost education, and gradually building a social circle of friends. He transforms from a nervous, withdrawn man who relied on an umbrella as a psychological crutch into a more outgoing, confident, and dependable individual. By the time of the spin-off, he has been promoted to deputy director of the office, demonstrating significant personal and professional growth.
His key relationships are central to this transformation. His initial, worshipful dependence on Toichiro Suzuki represents his lowest point of manipulation. His bond with Mob is built on mutual understanding and respect, as Mob was the first person to see him not as a tool, but as a person in need of a friend. Most importantly, his relationship with Arataka Reigen becomes a cornerstone of his new life. Reigen acts as his mentor and boss, providing the structure and gentle guidance that allows Serizawa to find his own footing in the world.
In terms of notable abilities, Serizawa is one of the strongest espers in the series. His powers are typically visualized as a purple, static-like aura. He is a master of telekinesis, capable of moving massive objects and demonstrating fine control, such as manipulating multiple items at once. While he initially relied on his umbrella to focus his power, using it as a shield, a weapon, and a conduit for energy attacks, he eventually learns to channel his abilities through other objects, like business cards, showcasing his growing control and independence. His skill set also includes the ability to exorcise spirits and remove curses, making him a valuable asset to the consultation office.
