Description
Makoto Hanzawa, often referred to as Hanzawa-san, is the main protagonist of the spin-off series Detective Conan: The Culprit Hanzawa. He is a young adult who moves from the rural Izumo region in Shimane Prefecture to the bustling and notoriously dangerous Beika City. His primary reason for the relocation is a deep-seated grudge against Shinichi Kudo, whom he intends to murder. He considers Beika, with its exceptionally high crime rate, to be the ideal environment for his plan.

In terms of personality, Hanzawa is a naive and somewhat awkward country bumpkin who is frequently overwhelmed by the complexities and customs of city life. He is prone to anxious spiraling and often relies on advice and wisdom recalled from his mother to navigate everyday challenges. When he feels slighted, annoyed, or humiliated by others, he copes by vividly imagining gruesome scenarios of murdering them. However, he consistently restrains himself from acting on these violent impulses, as he believes that engaging in unnecessary crimes would attract unwanted police attention and jeopardize his primary objective. Despite his murderous intentions and macabre daydreams, he is ironically fearful and unsettled by actual violent crime and stigmatized locations.

His core motivation is to locate and kill Shinichi Kudo. This driving goal shapes all of his actions, from choosing his residence to his part-time job. However, his clumsy, ill-prepared nature and the constant chaotic distractions of Beika consistently thwart his plans. He is also motivated by a desire to fit in and survive financially in the city, leading him to take on various jobs.

His role in the story is that of a comedic and often hapless anti-hero. Rather than being a true criminal mastermind, he serves as a perspective character who interacts with the exaggerated versions of familiar characters and locales from the main Detective Conan series. His daily life is a series of misadventures and near-misses as he tries to balance his sinister goal with the mundane struggles of rent, work, and social interactions.

Key relationships highlight the contrast between his intentions and reality. He is terrified of Ran Mouri due to witnessing her formidable karate skills, causing him to see her as a major obstacle. He is also often followed and observed by Conan Edogawa, who finds him deeply suspicious. Hanzawa works part-time at a video rental store alongside detective Saguru Hakuba and other investigators, and he frequently ends up shouldering their work. He is close to his mother, Hitoe Hanzawa, whose wisdom he often recalls, and he has a strong, seemingly romantic, attachment to his cousin Saki. He also adopts a small dog named Pometaro from a pet shop, forming a caring bond with the animal.

Through the course of the series, Hanzawa shows little dramatic character development in the traditional sense. His central goal remains unchanged, and he continues to be both determined to carry out his plan and perpetually foiled by circumstances, his own incompetence, and the formidable inhabitants of Beika. His development is more situational, as he gradually learns to navigate the city and forms reluctant connections with the people around him, softening the edges of his villainous persona.

His most notable ability is his intense imagination for violent revenge scenarios, which serves as a narrative device for comedy. Beyond this, he possesses no special skills or physical prowess. He is, in fact, notably weak, easily intimidated, and often outmatched by the people he encounters. His primary assets are his stubborn persistence and his capacity to get by through menial labor. His visual design is a direct parody of the black-silhouetted culprit figure from the original series, typically depicted in a solid black outfit with purple shading and often carrying a yellow backpack.
