Description
Mercurius is one of the six Jupiter Sisters, heavenly deities who sacrificed themselves centuries ago to seal Old Hell. These goddesses later inhabited human hosts whose personalities resonated with their own traits. Mercurius specifically dwelled within Ayumi Takahara, an energetic and athletic high school student at Maijima Academy. Ayumi embodies a passionate sports enthusiasm and a tomboyish spirit, reflected in her short hair and active membership in the track-and-field club. She shares a close childhood friendship with Chihiro Kosaka and unknowingly hosted Mercurius long after Keima Katsuragi initially captured the runaway spirit within her.
As a goddess, Mercurius possesses adeptness in obscure and unfamiliar spells, wielding extensive knowledge of magical techniques unknown even to her sisters. This specialization enables her to manage complex or esoteric magical situations. Like all Jupiter Sisters, her powers wane under the influence of negative emotions like jealousy or anger. The goddesses communicate with their hosts through reflections and shadows, and Mercurius shares their collective ability to manifest physically via reflective surfaces. Their powers spring from their bond as heaven's chosen priestesses, not blood relation; the loss of any sister would break this bond, requiring their replacement.
During the Goddesses Arc, Mercurius lay dormant within Ayumi while Keima mistakenly targeted Chihiro as a potential host. After Keima harshly rejected Chihiro's genuine feelings, Ayumi witnessed the event and emotionally distanced herself from him. Keima later realized Ayumi was Mercurius's true host and embarked on a reconquest to awaken the goddess. Despite Ayumi's initial reluctance and distrust, stemming from Keima's treatment of Chihiro, she independently chose to confess her feelings during the school festival. This culminated in a kiss at Seaside Park that successfully awakened Mercurius.
Following her awakening, Diana swiftly evacuated Mercurius from the battlefield for safety while other goddesses and demons engaged Vintage forces. Her release completed the unification of the six Jupiter Sisters, empowering them to confront Vintage and thwart their plans to overrun Earth and New Hell. Ayumi's role as Mercurius's host continued to influence her actions, leading her to prioritize supporting Chihiro's relationship with Keima despite her own lingering feelings.
The Jupiter Sisters bear names derived from Roman deities, with Mercurius originating from Mercury, the son of Jupiter and Maia. Earlier lore depicted the sisters as blood relatives of Jupiter, though this was later revised to reflect their true origin as chosen priestesses. Visual distinctions exist between Mercurius's divine form and her host Ayumi, including variations in skin tone and hair color.
