Description
Mitsue Takeda is an elderly woman and a powerful spiritual medium who runs a fortune telling shop. She is short in stature with white hair and an aged face, and she typically wears a fortune telling outfit in her shop or a traditional Japanese robe when visiting shrines. Known by the title Godmother of Downtown, she possesses genuine psychic abilities and has the sight to perceive high-level supernatural entities, though her perception is not as comprehensive as that of Miko Yotsuya, the series' main protagonist. Mitsue is one of the first characters to recognize that Miko is afflicted by an exceptionally powerful monster, and she initially appears as a somewhat dubious fortune teller but later proves to be a legitimate and knowledgeable guide.

Her background includes a long career as a respected medium, during which she once took in a younger spiritualist named Rom Shindou as a favor to a friend, though she became uncertain about training him due to the extent of his power. Her late master, Oka Towako, ultimately made a sacrifice that involved Rom and later appeared as a shrine spirit. After a particularly terrifying encounter with the spirits surrounding Miko, Mitsue temporarily retired to the countryside, but she eventually returned to support Miko and offer her expertise.

Mitsue is cautious, experienced, and deeply aware of the dangers in the spirit world. Her primary motivation is to protect Miko and help her navigate the invisible threats that follow her. She provides practical assistance, such as protective charms and strategic advice, and is ultimately willing to risk her own life to aid Miko in facing increasingly dangerous entities. Her role in the story is that of a mentor and protector, grounding the protagonist in the rules and traditions of spiritual defense.

Her key relationships include Miko Yotsuya, whom she mentors and protects; Rom Shindou, a flashy, modern spiritualist with whom she shares a complex professional history and rivalry; and Hana Yurikawa, Miko’s best friend, whose powerful life energy attracts spirits and whose safety Mitsue indirectly supports. She also has a long-standing connection to the spirit world through her deceased master.

In terms of development, Mitsue moves from a retired, cautious figure to an active mentor who confronts her fears and re-engages with the supernatural community. Her abilities include strong spiritual sight, the capacity to perceive and differentiate between various levels of ghosts and malevolent entities, and the knowledge to craft or bestow charms that offer some degree of protection. She is not an exorcist in a combative sense, but her wisdom and experience make her a vital source of support for Miko. Mitsue’s presence in the series reinforces the theme that even those with genuine power must acknowledge their limits and rely on others when facing the unknown.
