Description
Queen Margaret of Anjou is the queen consort of King Henry VI and one of the central antagonists in the anime Requiem of the Rose King. She is the mother of Edward of Westminster, the Prince of Wales, and the de facto leader of the Lancaster faction in the dynastic struggle against the House of York.

In terms of background, Margaret is of French aristocratic origin from the House of Valois-Anjou and becomes queen through a political marriage tied to peace between England and France. She enters the English court as a foreign-born queen and soon discovers that her husband cannot govern effectively. Henry VI is gentle, devout, mentally fragile, and strongly averse to war, so Margaret gradually assumes the real responsibilities of power, acting as the authority behind the throne and as the one who actually commands the Lancastrian armies in his place.

In personality, Margaret is tough, proud, and fiercely ambitious. Unlike Henry, she has no hesitation about using violence, and she treats it as a practical means of keeping the upper hand. She is willing to do whatever her position demands, from taking the frontline in battle and leading her troops personally to fleeing England and seeking military and political support from France. Her ruthlessness is most visible in how she treats her enemies. When Richard, Duke of York, the head of the York family, falls into her hands, she mocks and degrades him before killing him herself, and she leads her soldiers with evident relish for the brutality of war. Her ferocity sets her apart from most of the men around her, and her devotion is directed almost entirely at her son rather than at her husband.

Her motivations center on securing the succession for her son Edward. She is bitterly disappointed by Henry's weakness, and her resentment turns into open defiance when Henry agrees to disinherit Edward and name the Duke of York's line as successors. From that point onward, she dedicates herself to preserving the Lancaster claim at any cost, rallying nobles, raising armies, and negotiating with foreign powers on her son's behalf.

In the story, Margaret is the principal opposing force to the York family and, in particular, to the protagonist Richard. Her victory over the Duke of York removes the head of the opposing house and creates a deep personal enmity between her and York's youngest son. She continues the war even after Henry VI is deposed, flees abroad to gather support, and forms alliances with former enemies such as Warwick when those alliances serve the Lancaster cause, even helping to restore Henry to the throne for a time. Her final campaign ends in defeat. She and Edward are captured, and Edward is killed by George and Richard. With the deaths of her son and later her husband, the cause she upheld collapses, and Margaret is left as a diminished prisoner rather than the powerful queen she once was.

Her key relationships define her arc. Her marriage to Henry VI is the source of both her authority and her frustration, since she must rule and fight in his place while resenting his inability to protect his own crown. Her bond with Edward is the emotional core of her character, and every political or military decision she makes is shaped by the wish to make him king. Against the York family, she is a relentless enemy; her execution of the elder Richard makes her the direct cause of the protagonist's grief and need for vengeance, while her son's death at the hands of York's sons completes the cycle of violence between the two houses.

In terms of development, Margaret moves from a commanding and self-assured queen to a bereaved woman stripped of everything she fought for. Her early dominance gives way to exile, dependence on foreign allies, and finally imprisonment, and the confidence that once made her the true power in England is gradually replaced by loss. The story presents her severity as a product of her circumstances, showing a capable woman forced to wield power in a world that did not expect a queen to lead armies, and a mother willing to become merciless in order to protect her child.

Her notable abilities include military command and personal leadership in battle, shrewd political maneuvering, and the determination to hold the Lancastrian faction together despite her husband's incapacity. She is also a persistent survivor who seeks alliances with Scotland and France when driven out of England. Her greatest strength is her will, as she refuses to yield even in defeat until there is nothing left to fight for.
