Description
Clothes is an Unidentified Mysterious Animal, or UMA, that embodies the world rule of clothing. As a UMA, it is a being created by God to impose a specific concept, in this case garments, upon the Earth. The entity first appears after escaping from the facility where it was held captive by an organization known as the Union.
In its natural state, Clothes has no fixed form and appears as a shapeless, sticky, and amorphous blob. When it attaches to a human host, it transforms into the specific article of clothing or accessory that the person desires most at that moment. This can range from everyday outfits to specialized costumes. While in its clothing form, Clothes typically manifests its face on the fabric, displaying round eyes and a wide mouth filled with sharp teeth, often in a mischievous grin. It retains the ability to stretch this facial expression outward from the garment itself.
The personality of Clothes is marked by a strong sense of pride and a short temper, being easily angered and very full of itself. It holds its craft of clothing creation in high regard and becomes deeply annoyed by impossible requests or insults directed at its work. Despite its surly and easily flustered nature, it has a notable fondness for eating balls of yarn, which it considers a special treat. While it is a wild creature by nature, it has been effectively tamed by the main protagonist, Andy, although it still maintains its core personality of being perpetually irritated, particularly by Andy’s constant demands.
The primary ability of Clothes is twofold, centering on transformation and control. First, it can shapeshift into the most desired outfit of its wearer and can also replicate the functions of other accessories, such as becoming a working communication device or a badge. Second, if the host is satisfied with and loves the clothing created for them, Clothes can take complete control of their body. The person becomes a puppet, forced to act against their own will, with their physical limits potentially being ignored or amplified under the UMA's control. This control is broken if the host loses consciousness. Clothes also possesses a powerful regeneration ability, allowing it to repair itself from serious damage and return to a pristine state within a matter of seconds.
The key relationship Clothes has is with Andy, who becomes its unwilling host. Clothes attempted to possess Andy, but his impossible expectations—demanding a suit that is indestructible, regenerates instantly, and is always available on call—meant that he was never truly satisfied with the clothing provided. Because Andy perpetually finds the clothing lacking, Clothes is unable to assert its control over him. As a result, Clothes is reluctantly forced to remain as Andy's personal, custom-made outfit, a role it accepted only after being defeated and tamed by Andy and Fuuko Izumo. The entity also forms a friendlier dynamic with Fuuko Izumo, who treats it with kindness. She gives it the nickname Kuro-chan and offers it balls of yarn as a reward or snack. In return, Clothes sometimes helps Fuuko, often to rein in Andy’s more reckless or absurd impulses.
The development of Clothes follows a trajectory from a threatening antagonist to a pragmatic, if grumpy, ally. It begins as a dangerous wild UMA that escapes captivity and proceeds to possess multiple people, including a Union guard and a girl named Mui, forcing them to attack others. Its defeat at the hands of the main pair leads to its strange cohabitation with Andy. Over time, it integrates into the group as a useful if frequently exasperated member, assisting in missions by transforming into necessary tools or special costumes. Although it initially resents its situation, it becomes a regular part of the team, valued for its unique abilities and providing moments of comic relief through its interactions with Andy, whose endless and bizarre requests for better clothing continue to be a source of ongoing frustration.
