Description
Algard Von Palettia is the younger brother of Anisphia Wynn Palettia and the former crown prince of the Kingdom of Palettia. As the sole inheritor to the throne following his sister’s renunciation of her claim, he was burdened from a young age with the immense pressure of becoming the future king. His upbringing was defined by a need to be diligent and hardworking, as he lacked the extraordinary, innate talents that seemed to come so naturally to those around him, particularly his older sister. This pressure was amplified by the political history of his kingdom, where a past civil war had made the stability of the crown paramount, forcing the royal family to uphold strict traditions, especially regarding the nobility's belief in magic.

Algard is initially characterized by a deep-seated resentment and disillusionment that masks a more complex and tragic inner world. Publicly, he carries himself with the pride, charm, and dignity expected of a prince, but beneath this facade lies a caustic bitterness and a rebellious nature. He grew disillusioned not only with his sister but with the very foundations of magic and the world itself. His personality is a product of profound feelings of inferiority and rivalry with Anisphia, who, despite being unable to use magic, pursued her own path with an unorthodox and seemingly carefree passion that he could never allow himself. While he once shared a close and admiring bond with his sister, this relationship fractured over time as he was left to bear the weight of royal expectations alone, feeling abandoned by her decision to forsake her duties. His diligence gave way to a simmering anger at a system he saw as corrupt and decaying.

The core of Algard’s motivation is not a simple lust for power, but a desperate desire to break the existing system that he believes is slowly destroying the kingdom. He felt that if he ascended the throne as a conventional ruler, he would be nothing more than a figurehead king, powerless to stop the growing polarization between nobles and commoners or the excessive belief in magic and spirits. For him, both magic and his status as crown prince were curses. His actions, including publicly breaking off his engagement to Euphyllia Magenta on false pretenses, were a calculated act of rebellion intended to disrupt the status quo. He was manipulated by shadowy noble figures like the Chartreuse family, who exploited his distress for their own political gain. Ultimately, Algard sought to acquire the power of a vampire, not for its own sake, but to gain the strength necessary to tear down the current political structure, remove the power of all nobles including himself, and then vanish from his position, believing this destructive path was the only way to enact meaningful change.

In the story, Algard serves as the primary antagonist of the first major arc, his actions serving as the catalyst that brings the protagonist, Anisphia, and the disgraced Euphyllia together. His public humiliation of Euphyllia sets her on a new path, while his subsequent rebellion forces the simmering tensions within the royal family and the kingdom into the open. His role evolves from a scheming prince to a tragic figure who, feeling he has no other options, transforms himself into a vampire by stealing a magic stone from the girl he claimed to love, Lainie Cyan. This act leads to a direct and violent confrontation with his sister, a battle fueled by years of unspoken pain and misunderstanding. Following his defeat, he is stripped of his title and exiled to the remote borders of the kingdom as a prisoner, forced to live as a sample for investigating vampire ecology. However, his role transforms again in later parts of the story into that of a redeemed supporting character. In exile, he is given the official task of pioneering the eastern frontier and, if successful, may earn a pardon, eventually being granted the title of Baron.

Algard’s key relationships are fraught with complexity and pain. His relationship with Anisphia is the emotional core of his character arc, defined by a tragic mix of love, jealousy, rivalry, and resentment. He both admired and hated her freedom, feeling that she abandoned him to a fate she found unbearable. In their final confrontation, it becomes clear that his rebellion was also a cry for her recognition. With Euphyllia Magenta, his former fiancée, his actions were a profound betrayal that publicly humiliated her, but later, after his exile, he is able to speak with her without pretense, expressing a wish to be in a position similar to hers. Lainie Cyan is the commoner he broke his engagement for; his feelings for her are portrayed as both sincere and impulsive, a desperate grasp at a personal connection outside the rigid royal structure, though he ultimately sacrifices her for power. His father, King Orphans, deeply regrets the mistakes made in raising his children, acknowledging that he placed an impossible burden on Algard.

The character’s development is a clear arc from fall to potential redemption. He begins as a seemingly arrogant and entitled prince but is revealed to be a broken individual crushed by duty. After his defeat, exile, and humiliation, his arrogance is tempered with humility and regret. He begins a long process of self-reflection, accountability, and rebuilding his life far from the throne. He demonstrates a willingness to reconcile with his past mistakes and work toward a genuine, if modest, path forward, leveraging his skills not for destruction, but for constructive purposes like frontier development.

Algard is notably a capable magic user, proficient in traditional noble magic, which contrasts sharply with his sister’s unorthodox magical engineering. His primary affinity is water magic, which he can wield with great subtlety and power, from manipulating ice to creating large-scale cover with fog. He is also a hardworking and diligent student, having trained not only in combat but also in the intricate arts of political negotiation and governance, possessing a keen analytical mind and the ability to manage relationships and anticipate the expectations of others, skills his sister often lacks. After his transformation into a vampire, he gains supernatural regeneration, enhanced strength, and other inhuman abilities, which he uses in his climactic battle against Anisphia. His talents as a leader and negotiator later flourish in exile, proving him to be an exceptional administrator capable of managing diverse groups and complex political situations.
