Description
Masahide Tokuda, often called Toku, works as an employee at Monster Sweeper Inc., a professional kaiju cleaning company that disposes of the remains of kaiju after battles with the Defense Force. He is a tall man with black, afro-styled curly hair, a mild mustache, a goatee, and a missing tooth, and is known for his large eyes and animated facial expressions. Tokuda is a loud yet gentle individual who speaks his mind plainly, even when his words may be uncomfortable for others. He becomes easily irritated when his colleagues lose their nerve in difficult situations, and he places a great deal of trust in the Japan Defense Force to protect the country. Despite his sometimes gruff exterior, he has a deeply selfless side. He is known to help bystanders during kaiju attacks and has shown a willingness to sacrifice his own life to protect his daughter, Chieko Tokuda. Outside of work, he enjoys gambling, drinking, and watching variety shows, and according to his subordinates, he can appear remarkably composed at times despite these habits. His motivations are driven by a strong sense of responsibility toward his family and his community. He believes in the mission of the Defense Force and encourages his team to maintain faith in the soldiers who fight the kaiju, including his former colleague Kafka Hibino. In the story, Tokuda serves as a supporting character who provides a grounded, civilian perspective on the kaiju threat. He introduces the part-time worker Leno Ichikawa to Kafka Hibino, and his team witnesses several major events from a distance, including the Third Division's battles and the aftermath of the attack in Shinagawa. He also experiences a personal crisis when a kaiju attacks his daughter’s wedding, an event that forces him to confront his own limitations. His key relationship is with his daughter, Chieko, for whom he shows unwavering protectiveness. He is also a close friend and former coworker of Kafka Hibino, and he borrows money from his colleague Ichitaka Mitsuike. Over time, Tokuda’s character develops a stronger sense of resolve. He reprimands his team for losing hope after the death of Director General Isao Shinomiya, expressing his belief that the Defense Force and Kafka will ultimately defeat Kaiju No. 9. This reflects his growth from a simple cleanup worker into a figure of quiet leadership and faith within his small team. In terms of notable abilities, Tokuda does not possess any combat powers or special kaiju-related abilities. His skills lie in his experience with kaiju corpse disposal and his ability to lead and motivate his team during dangerous cleanup operations. He is a hard worker who takes pride in his job, and his composure under pressure is one of his most reliable traits.
