Description
Otogiri Oiran, also known as Otogiri the Soul-Sucking Oiran, is a powerful spectral entity in the anime Dark Gathering, with the full name Hakutei Ryouran Otogiri Oiran. She is one of the spirits raised by the young spirit master Yayoi Houzuki and belongs to a special tier of spirits known as Graduates, ghosts so dangerously powerful that they have essentially outgrown ordinary control. She is the third Graduate to appear and, at the time of her introduction, the only female one among Yayoi's collection. Under normal circumstances, she is sealed inside a fox plushie and is released through the incantation "Glitter."

Her backstory is a tragic one rooted in beauty, poverty, and betrayal. In life, Otogiri was a woman born with extraordinary natural beauty. Her family was poor, and when her mother fell ill from overwork and from tending to her sick father, Otogiri chose to sell herself into the pleasure quarters to save them. In her own mind, her beauty was her identity and her purpose; it was the thing that had rescued her family, and she took enormous pride in it. She rose to become a celebrated oiran, and as a senior courtesan she was expected to look after younger girls. One of these was a new apprentice named Kurenai. Otogiri treated her kindly and, as a gesture of encouragement, gave Kurenai a cherished hand mirror that Otogiri's own mother had received as part of her wedding trousseau.

That kindness set the tragedy in motion. A wealthy man named Ito offered a massive sum, roughly two boxes of gold worth an estimated two hundred fifty million yen in modern terms, to buy out Otogiri's contract and marry her. Kurenai, consumed by jealousy, poisoned Ito's sake with aconite. Ito survived but wrongly blamed Otogiri, and in his rage he beat her so brutally that she was disfigured. The marriage arrangement dissolved, and Otogiri's position in the brothel collapsed. She then contracted a serious illness that covered her face and body with lumps, and the mercury-based medicine she took made her hair and teeth fall out. Forced out of the brothel, she was reduced to selling herself in the streets to earn money for treatment. It was there that Kurenai reappeared, elegantly dressed, and revealed that she had been the one to poison Ito, that she herself was now to be bought out by him, and that she had always resented standing beneath someone more beautiful. As a final cruelty, Kurenai held up the very mirror Otogiri had given her and forced Otogiri to see her own ruined face. That night, Otogiri went to the brothel, poured oil over Kurenai, and set both of them ablaze, laughing as she died.

After death, her vengeful spirit attached itself to the hand mirror she had once given Kurenai. The mirror gained a reputation for aging its owners and was eventually sold at a flea market for one hundred yen. Yayoi recognized that an unremarkable female spirit was attached to it and bought it, initially regarding the ghost as too weak to be dangerous. Within a month, however, Otogiri devoured the other spirits in Yayoi's collection room and evolved into a full-fledged Graduate, one of the strongest and most dangerous entities in Yayoi's arsenal.

Personality-wise, Otogiri is a sadistic, self-centered narcissist who considers herself the most beautiful woman in the world and harbors a grudge against everyone after her death. Her gorgeous oiran face is essentially a mask; beneath it lurks a melted, festering, grotesque visage that reflects how she died. She is proud, haughty, quick-tempered, and highly intelligent, which befits an oiran, a position traditionally requiring cultivation and wit. Being called a cheap woman is a particular trigger for her rage, an insult that carries a bitter irony because the object in which she was found was literally sold for one hundred yen. She prefers men who act quickly, and she dislikes women, children, and anyone who does not appreciate an oiran. For all her malice, her mortal life showed a caring and considerate side, one that her suffering and death thoroughly buried. As a spirit, she preys on the living and the dead without mercy, draining their life energy to heal herself, preserve her beauty, and amplify her curses.

Her motivations are shaped by that ruin. Her beauty was once her proof of worth and the means by which she saved her family, so after losing it and being destroyed by envy, she clings to beauty through violence, consuming other lives to maintain it. She also deeply resents being bound and sealed by Yayoi, and she constantly plots rebellion, threatening to burn Yayoi down to the last drop of blood if she ever breaks free. That hostility makes her difficult to command. Still, she is pragmatic: when summoned against a clearly superior enemy, she sets her betrayal aside and fights properly, a habit she developed while surviving among Yayoi's other spirits by joining forces to crush troublesome rivals first.

In the story, Otogiri serves as one of Yayoi's heaviest combat assets, reserved for battles against unusually powerful S-rank spirits. Her first major confrontation in the anime occurs during the fight with the vengeful child spirit at the old water gate, where Yayoi unleashes her after the enemy evolves into a more dangerous form. There, Otogiri overwhelms the spirit with her fire-butterfly curse and eventually incinerates it within her burning brothel curse. Her history also includes a past feat of great importance to Yayoi: she was instrumental in Yayoi's earlier campaign against a god, where Yayoi paired her with the immortal Demon Sergeant, a Graduate with regenerating flesh, using him as an endless energy source so that Otogiri could keep absorbing his life force and grow stronger indefinitely.

Her key relationships reflect her nature. With Yayoi, she is openly hostile and treacherous, though Yayoi manages her in combat by deliberately directing enemy attacks at the plushie containing her, inflaming her anger against the foe rather than against her handler. With Kurenai, her relationship is one of absolute betrayal, and the memory of it fuels her most destructive powers. With the Demon Sergeant, she has surprisingly good compatibility despite their opposite personalities, since she can drain him to fuel herself. She also fights alongside Keitarou and Eiko during the water-gate battle, supporting them once she is brought out.

Over the course of the story, Otogiri continues to develop in power. Originally a weak haunting spirit, she becomes a Graduate by devouring other ghosts, and her abilities expand as she absorbs greater energy. After feeding on immense power from the Demon Sergeant and from the deity Taisei Seikun, her curses grow beyond their original limits, and she manifests a fourth curse that even Yayoi did not know she possessed.

Her abilities are organized into four escalating curses. The first, Hakutei, sends out countless fire butterflies that drain the life force of anyone they touch, causing rapid aging and weakening. The stolen life heals Otogiri and strengthens her, and the effect cannot be blocked by physical defense. The second curse, Ekibyo, activates once she has absorbed enough energy, afflicting anyone who has taken in her flesh or blood with the diseases she suffered in life, including lumps across the body, headaches, fever, and vomiting, which shatter the victim's ability to think clearly. The third curse, Enjo Rōkaku, or the Burning Manse, is triggered when her disfigured true face is reflected in the mirror to which she was bound. It recreates the burning pleasure quarter as an inescapable prison of scorching flame, where fire butterflies feed on souls and keep burning until the victim is consumed or Otogiri is sealed away. Smoke from this fire restores her beauty and power. This curse was later upgraded so that it can be invoked without the mirror once she has absorbed a sufficient quantity of life force. The fourth curse, Kugai, appears when she has absorbed enormous energy. Her body turns pitch black, and her fire butterflies transform into pools of oily black liquid. Those who see their reflection in it have their consciousness dragged into a spectral brothel within the liquid, while their real bodies leak spiritual energy that Otogiri absorbs. The more energy the victim loses, the more cage bars appear around the prison, and if fully drained, the trapped consciousness is burned to ash. It is a nearly inescapable curse, and the only known way out is overwhelming force.

Despite her power, Otogiri has clear limitations. She is a slow starter, relatively weak at the beginning of a battle and needing time to drain life before reaching full strength. She is also physically fragile, and a fast enemy that kills her before she powers up can defeat her. In addition, her fire butterflies are guided by her eyesight, so blinding her reduces her attacks to crude, uncontrolled movements. These weaknesses, along with her constant scheming to escape, make her a dangerous tool that Yayoi must handle with care, but when properly unleashed, Otogiri Oiran ranks among the most terrifying spirits in the series.
