Description
Kei Uomi is a prominent supporting character in Shangri-La Frontier, known in the game under the player name Oikatzo and in other titles as Modor Katzo. He is a nineteen-year-old professional gamer who belongs to a multi-genre pro gaming team called Cyber Battalion, and he is widely recognized as one of the strongest fighting game players in Japan. In the real world, Kei has blond hair and an androgynous appearance, and his professional success is evident from the high-end gaming equipment in his room. Within Shangri-La Frontier, however, his avatar is a female character with a tomboyish demeanor, a choice he made because he is accustomed to using female characters from his extensive experience with fighting games.
Kei's personality shifts noticeably between his real life and his in-game persona. As himself, he is typically described as a friendly and driven individual whose life revolves around gaming, with a daily routine of morning and evening ranked matches. When playing as Oikatzo, he adopts a much more hot-blooded, gutsy, and spirited attitude, giving the impression of a tough and energetic tomboy. He possesses a strong desire to win and has a stated dislike of defeat, which fuels his competitive nature. While he is generally rational and level-headed, he can become visibly jealous or sulky when his friends, particularly Sunraku, encounter unique scenarios or rare monsters that he has been unable to find himself. This stems from his calculated playstyle, which relies on gathering data and building strategies on a solid foundation of safety, a method that ironically seems to prevent him from stumbling into the unpredictable unique quests that others find.
Kei's role in the story is primarily as a close ally and fellow member of the clan Wolfgang, alongside Sunraku and Pencilgon. The three of them form a core team known among fans as the "Three Outlaws," and together they achieved the feat of being the first players to defeat a Unique Monster, Wezaemon the Tombguard. His relationship with Sunraku is particularly significant; they met while playing a poorly made "crappy game," and Kei credits Sunraku with getting him addicted to that genre of games. Despite their friendship, their rivalry is strong, as Sunraku's improvisational and "romantic" playstyle often defies Kei's logical and data-driven approach, making him an unpredictable opponent. He is also good friends with Pencilgon, with whom he often teams up to question Sunraku about his secretive activities.
Throughout the series, Kei demonstrates notable development in how he approaches Shangri-La Frontier. He initially started playing the game simply as a way to kill time between real-world tournaments. However, he eventually becomes deeply invested, partly due to the desire to secure his own unique scenario and partly due to the camaraderie and challenges presented by his friends. His skills, originally honed in PvP fighting games, are adapted for PvE boss battles, where his precise timing and mechanical expertise become invaluable.
Kei's notable abilities are defined by his in-game class and real-world skills. In Shangri-La Frontier, his main job is a Monk, specifically a Spirit Fist User, which allows him to use various buff skills that envelop his fists in different colors of energy, such as Spirit Fist Red for strength and vitality or Spirit Fist Black for increased damage. He can combine these into more powerful techniques like the Combo Spirit Fist Crimson Cannon and the devastating Spirit Fist Dark Overstrike. He also has counter skills like Repel Counter and attack skills such as Crush Uppercut and Human Pile Bunker, the latter of which can pierce through formidable defenses. His sub-job is Archaeologist, which gives him access to a whip that he uses for utility, such as restraining enemies or navigating terrain. Outside of his game-specific skills, Kei brings his real-life talents as a pro gamer, including incredible reflexes, the ability to perform "Just Guard" moves after seeing an attack only once, and his expertise as a top-ranked Cavalry Crisis player, which he famously used to stay mounted on the boss Wezaemon's summoned steed, Kirin.
