Description
Kei Uomi is a young man who stands as one of Japan's top professional fighting game players, belonging to the esports team Nitro Squad. In the real world, he has a friendly and approachable demeanor, with blond hair and a casual fashion sense. His career as a pro gamer began roughly three years before the events of the story, during which he quickly rose through the ranks with an impressive record of minimal losses. A pivotal moment in his competitive life was a match against Sylvia Goldberg, the top American pro-gamer, at the Galaxia Heroes Burst World Championship. Despite thoroughly researching her playstyle and managing to corner her during the fight, he was ultimately defeated when she effortlessly changed her rhythm. This loss left him shocked by the gap in their abilities but also forged a powerful rivalry, as he declared he would one day defeat her, a challenge that excited Goldberg in turn.
Outside of the professional circuit, Kei's passion for gaming extends to so-called trash games, low-quality titles filled with glitches and oddities. It was in one such game, Berserk Online Passion, that he first encountered Rakuro Hizutome, known in-game as Sunraku. Immediately recognizing Rakuro's exceptional skills, Kei attempted to recruit him for his esports team. Though Rakuro declined due to a promise to his parents to pursue a normal career path, the two became close friends and regular gaming partners. Their friendship was solidified during a challenge in the MMO Unite Rounds, where they took on the dominant player Pencil Knight. After a chaotic confrontation that resulted in the building they were in being destroyed, the three developed a begrudging mutual respect.
In the full-dive VR game Shangri-La Frontier, Kei creates an avatar named Oikatzo, which is a striking departure from his real-life appearance. Oikatzo is a blonde-haired woman with a tomboyish air, wearing a red and light beige outfit. More than just an aesthetic choice, this avatar seems to allow Kei to adopt a different persona; while he is normally calm and friendly, as Oikatzo he becomes much more hot-blooded, gutsy, and direct. His primary motivation for diving into the world of Shangri-La Frontier is twofold. Initially, he is drawn in by the genuine passion and excitement he sees in his friend Sunraku. Later, it is revealed that he also has a professional interest: to familiarize himself with the game's engine, which is the same as that of an upcoming major title in the fighting game scene, giving him a competitive edge.
Within the narrative, Kei as Oikatzo serves as one of the core members of the trio alongside Sunraku and the player Pencilgon, whose real name is Towa Amane. Together, they form the clan Wolfgang to take on high-level challenges, most notably the Seven Colossi, which are powerful unique monsters. Oikatzo's role in the party is frequently that of the logical and skilled combatant, his professional experience providing a reliable backbone for their often reckless strategies. His key relationships are defined by this dynamic. With Sunraku, he shares a deep bond of rivalry and friendship, frequently competing in trash games and pushing each other to improve. With Pencilgon, he shares a more businesslike respect, though he is often suspicious of her schemes, having experienced her ruthless tactics firsthand in Unite Rounds. His ongoing rivalry with Sylvia Goldberg serves as a long-term goal, representing the peak of professional competition he aspires to conquer.
Throughout the series, Kei shows a capacity for growth and adaptation. His professional background has made him a master of preparation, studying opponents to adjust his playstyle accordingly, which has resulted in a winning percentage in official matches that has never dipped below eighty percent. However, he is shown to struggle against completely unexpected scenarios or opponents he has not had time to research, a weakness he acknowledges when he doubts he could have defeated a Colossus on his first, unplanned attempt. His development involves learning to balance his meticulous, analytical approach with the more improvisational, glitch-exploiting style of players like Sunraku.
Oikatzo's notable abilities in Shangri-La Frontier are formidable, reflecting his high-level gaming instincts. His main job is that of a Monk, specifically a Spirit Fist User, which prevents him from equipping traditional weapons but grants him immense hand-to-hand combat prowess. This class comes with a high pool of HP and Vitality, allowing him to function as a light fighter who can both deal and absorb significant damage. His core combat mechanic involves using Spirit Fist, a series of magical buffs activated by calling out colors. Red Impact boosts his strength and vitality, while Black surrounds his fists with black flames for temporary increased damage. By combining these, he can perform more powerful attacks like the Combo Spirit Fist Flame Crimson, and even tricolor mixes such as Dark Overstrike, a powerful electrical surge that consumes a great deal of stamina.
His skill set is diverse, ranging from defensive to offensive techniques. Repel Counter allows him to punch an attack away entirely, negating damage. His offensive arsenal includes Crush Uppercut, which can fell weaker enemies in a single blow; Dual Impact, a two-strike combo that staggers tough foes; and the devastating Human Pile Bunker, a lunging punch capable of piercing through heavy defenses, a skill that proved critical during the battle against the Colossi Wezaemon. His sub-job is an Archaeologist, which provides utility outside of combat, such as the Ruin Sense ability to analyze and unlock structures. It also grants him access to whips, like the Whip Servant Snake, which he can manipulate for combat or exploration. Additionally, his real-world skill as a top-ranked Cavalry Crisis player, a game that simulates rodeo riding, translates directly into the game, allowing him to stay mounted on wild creatures like the Kirin. His build is further complemented by a unique ability called Scrap and Build, which allows him to sacrifice a weapon to boost his stats, a testament to his flexible and strategic approach to gaming.
