Description
Jinwoo Sung begins his journey as the weakest of all hunters, holding the lowest rank of E in a world where gifted individuals battle monsters within magical dungeons known as Gates. Before becoming a hunter, his father disappeared during a dungeon raid, and his mother later fell victim to an Eternal Slumber illness, leaving Jinwoo as the sole provider for his family. He takes on the dangerous profession to pay for his mother's medical treatment and to support his younger sister, Jinah, through school.

Initially, Jinwoo is timid, self-doubting, and frequently injured due to his lack of power. His reputation as the "weakest hunter of all mankind" forces him to scrape by on low-tier raids, relying on others for survival. This precarious existence changes forever during a catastrophic event known as the Double Dungeon Incident. Facing certain death to protect his party members, Jinwoo accepts a mysterious offer and is chosen as the sole Player of a program called the System. This grants him a unique interface, similar to a video game, that allows him to see quests, stats, and skills, and most importantly, to level up and grow stronger indefinitely.

Following this transformation, Jinwoo's personality evolves significantly. He becomes more calculating, calm, and strategic, often displaying a ruthless efficiency in battle. While his core motivation is the protection of his family, his experiences force him to adopt a pragmatic and sometimes cold morality, particularly when dealing with enemies who threaten his life. He is not driven by a desire for fame, money, or power for its own sake, but by a fierce determination to care for his loved ones. This is most clearly demonstrated when, after earning enough money and successfully crafting the Elixir of Life to wake his mother from her coma, Jinwoo breaks down in tears, revealing that his quest was never about power but about restoring his family. At this point, he even considers retiring from hunting to simply enjoy a normal life with his family, showing his priorities have always been personal rather than glory-driven.

Jinwoo plays the central role as the protagonist whose growth redefines the balance of power in the world. He begins as a helpless underdog and becomes humanity's greatest asset against increasingly dangerous magical threats. He is known for his signature ability: necromancy. After completing a crucial job-change quest, he becomes the Shadow Monarch, gaining the power to extract the shadows of fallen enemies and command them as eternal soldiers. This army, stored in his own shadow, grows throughout his journey and includes incredibly powerful beings. Despite the dark nature of his powers, he exercises a distinct code of honor, such as releasing a healer's soul so it would not be bound as a shadow soldier, a decision that reflects his compassion and respect for others.

In terms of key relationships, Jinwoo shares a close bond with his younger sister, Jinah, and after her recovery, his mother. Lee Joohee, a B-rank healer, was one of his few friends during his days as an E-rank hunter; she often healed his injuries and their bond was forged through a shared need for survival. He also forms a loyal friendship with Yoo Jinho, a young hunter from a wealthy family who becomes his trusted ally and second-in-command. His most significant romantic relationship develops with Cha Hae-In, an S-rank hunter and the only one who does not despise him due to the unique scent of his magical energy. Over time, their relationship deepens, and they eventually marry and have a son named Sung Suho.

Jinwoo's power progression is monumental. Starting as an E-rank, his abilities expand through the System to include physical augmentation, stealth, and superhuman speed. After becoming the Shadow Monarch, his powers include Shadow Extraction, Shadow Storage, and the ability to use the skills of his shadow soldiers. His physical capabilities eventually reach cosmic levels, allowing him to travel between dimensions, manipulate the concept of death, and survive the erasure of his own soul. At the climax of the war against the other Monarchs, he fully awakens as the true successor to the Shadow Monarch. Following a lengthy interdimensional war, he uses the powerful artifact, the Cup of Reincarnation, to reset the timeline, erasing the tragedies that occurred while retaining his memories to ensure the safety of his family and the world.
