Description
Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara is a central character in the Azumanga Daioh franchise. She shares a long-standing friendship and rivalry with Tomo Takino, dating back to grade school. Their dynamic involves frequent antagonism, with Yomi typically acting as the voice of reason to Tomo's impulsiveness, sometimes escalating to physical comedy like Yomi knocking Tomo unconscious with an uppercut.
Academically strong, Yomi consistently achieves high grades, ranking second in her class only behind the child prodigy Chiyo Mihama. She also demonstrates solid athletic competence, outperforming most peers though not matching top athletes like Sakaki or Kagura. Despite these strengths, she harbors persistent self-consciousness about her weight, leading to repeated, often failed, dieting attempts due to her fondness for sweets and spicy foods. She sometimes anonymously shares this struggle with radio talk hosts, much to Tomo's amusement.
Yomi projects an image of maturity and responsibility, positioning herself as the serious counterbalance to her classmates' eccentricities. However, this persona masks her own occasional childish tendencies. She initially feigned disinterest in a class trip to a theme park but later privately exhibited excitement, purchasing guidebooks in preparation. Similar behavior occurred during the Okinawa trip, surprising Chiyo with her guidebook purchase despite an attempted neutral demeanor. She also participated in teasing Osaka after deliberately causing her hiccups by feeding her overly spicy food. Her academic diligence faced challenges; she resorted to asking Chiyo to infuse an amulet with intelligence for college entrance exams, following examples set by Tomo and Osaka, and was the last among her friends to pass such an exam.
Parallels exist between Yomi and physical education teacher Minamo Kurosawa, including their shared history with a childhood friend (Tomo for Yomi, Yukari for Minamo), their generally responsible natures mixed with occasional silliness, sensitivities about their love lives, and having a trait friends tease them about (Yomi's diets, Minamo's profession).
Physically, Yomi stands approximately 161–163 cm tall, making her the second tallest girl in her group after Sakaki. She has brown eyes and brown hair, typically wears glasses, and suffers from hay fever. She harbors a dislike for cicadas and is known to be a notably poor singer despite her voice actress's singing prowess. Her name, Koyomi, meaning "almanac," and its associated pun ("read between the lines") references the delayed revelation of her full name in the manga until the second volume, leading to her early fan designation as "Meganekko" (Glasses Girl).
